Being Clumsy
Posted in Family Life

Man, oh, man - I can't believe what a silly I pulled tonight.
It all started out when I was making cheesy chicken for supper - that's where you season the chicken, put it in the oven to cook and when it is done baking you lay slices of cheddar cheese on it, put it back in the oven until the cheese has melted. Well, everything was going really well until it came time to slice the cheese. We have one of those cheese slicers where you just lay it on top of the cheese, pull back and voila you have a slice of cheese.
The first slice of cheese worked really well, then came time to slice the second piece (cue the suspenseful music). My first clue that something was going to happen was when the slicer got stuck in the block of cheese - did that stop me? Did that make me ponder a different route to take????? Nope, neither of those things happened. Sigh, I just kept pulling back on the slicer until it pulled free and sliced right into my thumb!!!!!
Thankfully Don was home when this happened, although as he put it "The kids have their First Aid tickets, they could have helped if I wasn't home" - you can totally hear the sympathy can't you, lol. He is right, though, if he hadn't been home the kids could have helped me out. I'm not really sure how deep the cut is, I was trying not to look at it (kind of hoping that if I didn't look it wouldn't hurt as much, lol, it didn't work, lol).
So, now I am bandaged up and you wouldn't believe how many things you actually need your thumb for. Another blessing in this is that it happened to my left hand and not my right one. I had been planning on working on the BFF socks that I started on Saturday, on second thought, I think I'll give my thumb a rest and just relax with a cup of tea and watching some TV .... hmmmmm, I think Bones is on tonight.

What's been happening
Posted in Family Life
|
It occurred to me that I have MIA for a little bit - last post I told you all about me getting my wisdom tooth pulled out, this happened on a Wednesday. On the Friday of that same week I ended up going back to the dentist because the pain in my mouth was not getting any better, it actually felt worse. Guess what I discovered .... yep, I had a dry socket!!!!
So, pretty much all that weekend and for most of the next week I had been taking Ibuprofen to deal with the pain in my jaw from a healing dry socket (the dentist packed this foul tasting stuff in the hole that is helping to heal it - a friend of mine told me that it smelled like Elastoplast bandaids, the taste was even worse).
The other day I took school pictures of the kids. The weather was amazing for doing this and with the leaves turning yellow and falling off the trees it was the perfect back-drop. It was a good thing that we took them when we did because the next day the leaves were quickly turning from a beautiful yellow to that not-so-pretty brown, lol Here are the ones that Don has chosen for this year - I actually take a whole bunch of pictures so that he can choose the ones that he likes best:
This is the one that he liked best of Joshua - the picture was taken right in our front yard, we are very blessed to have such wonderful scenery right in front of us everyday.
And here is the one that he liked of Charlotte - this was also taken in our front yard, the road behind her is actually our driveway and the trees that are behind her divide our yard from our neighbor.
Today we are heading to a birthday party for a friend of Charlotte's, both Charlotte and I are really looking forward to this because it has been a while since we have visited with this particular family. Tomorrow both the kids are signed up to take a course through the Scouts, Josh isn't to pleased about it but it will earn them both some badges and give them more knowledge and skills in certain areas.

Yesterday's pain
Posted in Family Life
|
For about the past 6 months I have had a wisdom tooth that has been falling apart, occasionally it would cause some pain - you know, the stabbing kind that goes straight down the root of the tooth ... not very fun.
The kids and Don had all had work done on their teeth and Don told me that it was my turn. I wasn't looking forward to this because I knew that the removal of this tooth was going to happen. The last time I had a wisdom tooth removed I ended up with a dry socket and this was an experience that I just wasn't ready to repeat.
Soooooo, yesterday I was at the Dentist and she removed my last wisdom tooth. It was a pretty unpleasant experience because the freezing did not want to take (I was starting to get an infection in that tooth). They gave me four good shots of freezing and told me that I would be frozen for about 7 hours - my appointment was finished at 3:30 and by 7:00 last night the freezing was all out!!!!!
Today my jaw still hurts (Tylenol is only taking the edge off and Advil does nothing) and I can't open my mouth very wide which means that meal time consists of v e r y tiny bites of food - I guess that just gives me a reason to savor the meal more, right, lol.

***IMPORTANT***: you need a percolator style coffee pot to make this.
DO NOT use a drip style coffee maker to make this syrup!!!!!
* Make one pot of coffee, then discard the grounds.
* Add fresh grounds, percolate again, with the coffee as liquid, not fresh water.
* Do this three times.
* To the finished coffee mixture, add one half the amount of sugar (if you end up with 3 cups coffee mixture, add 1 1/2 cups sugar).
* Mix until sugar is completely dissolved.
* To use: add 2 - 3 tablespoons of syrup to a 10 oz glass of milk, stir to mix and enjoy.
