New Spelling Program Posted in Homeschooling
Over our Christmas Holidays I had been thinking more and more about doing a Spelling Program with the kids. However, being on the limited funds side, I didn't want to go out and spend a small fortune for something that might not 'fit' with us.
Back in July I went to a wonderful used book store with Pam, she found a book called "You Can Teach Your Child Successfully" by Ruth Beechick. She already had a copy of this book and encouraged me to get it because it was such a wonderful resource for her. I did get the book and have been reading it off and on since I bought it. I noticed that there is a few pages of spelling lists in this book, so I decided that this would be our spelling program ... each week we would have a spelling pre-test on Monday, on Tuesday the kids can look up the spelling words in the dictionary and write out the definitions (along with the correct spelling of the word), on Wednesday they will use their spelling words and make sentences with them, on Thursday they will play Spelling Battleship and on Friday, they will have their spelling test for the week. This is a lot of review of these words for the kids, but I find that they really need the review with certain subjects (that's why we like Saxon Math so much).
The other day, I was telling the kids about the new Spelling Program we would be starting and my oh, so quick daughter pointed out one flaw with it ..... can anyone from HLS spot it?????? Yes, it is the fact that I have spelling scheduled for Wednesday's (our weekly get together for Mug Up), lol. I need to do a bit of rearranging but I think it will still work out. Now, I just need to get the game boards made up for Spelling Battleship and we will be off and running - I want to use file folders and get them laminated so that they last a bit longer, but we will see if I actually get that done.

Iced Coffee Syrup
≈ coffee
≈ water
≈ sugar
***IMPORTANT***: you need a percolator style coffee pot to make this.
DO NOT use a drip style coffee maker to make this syrup!!!!!
* Make one pot of coffee, then discard the grounds.
* Add fresh grounds, percolate again, with the coffee as liquid, not fresh water.
* Do this three times.
* To the finished coffee mixture, add one half the amount of sugar (if you end up with 3 cups coffee mixture, add 1 1/2 cups sugar).
* Mix until sugar is completely dissolved.
* To use: add 2 - 3 tablespoons of syrup to a 10 oz glass of milk, stir to mix and enjoy.
