A little bit of this and that
I have a few things that need to be posted on my blog today, one is the recipe that I missed posting on Friday (but I'll post that in a separate entry) - things just got a little busy and I ran out of time to do it.
We picked up this neat little device at XSCargo yesterday - it's called Time's Up and you hook it up to your gaming system, set how much time (daily or weekly) that they are allowed and when the time is up ... the system shuts off. You can read more about it here. Here is what the unit looks like:
The reason that we invested in one of these is because my Mom gave the kids an old gaming system - I wanted to make sure that they didn't get so hung up on it that they had to play it all the time (basically I wanted to have control over how much time was spent on it without having to be a nag about it, lol).
This weekend we were at a friend's place helping out with the cattle drive - we had an absolute blast (as usual). After we left, we headed over to my Mom's and we loaded up 4 or 5 boxes of yarn, knitting needles and craft supplies as well as about 8 big green garbage bags full of yarn with a few patterns thrown in for good measure, lol. Here is a picture of all of it, I need to go through it and take out what I want and then donate the rest of it to needy knitters, lol.
As I was dumping all of this yarn into a pile (I realized after I took the picture that I forgot to empty one garbage bag full of yarn onto the pile) - I commented to the kids that there was enough yarn here to sink a ship (Charlotte agreed with me, lol).
The tan and white yarn that is in the middle of the bottom of the picture is Buffalo yarn and then to the right of that yarn is some gold balls of yarn - that is actual rug yarn. My Mom used to mix that in with regular worsted weight yarn when she made us kids slippers - I don't ever remember us wearing those slippers out, we outgrew them ... but I don't remember wearing them out.

Tuesday, October 23, 2007 - Buffalo yarn?

When you mentioned buffalo yarn, was that a brand name or actually yarn from a buffalo? I used to work up in Yellowstone and always loved curling up under my friend's buffalo robe. If it is indeed yarn from a buffalo, I would love to hear (if you've used it before) what the pros and/or cons of working with it are, and also where I might find some to purchase. Thank you and have a wonderful day!

It is the brand of wool that it is (actual name for it is White Buffalo and I have heard that they are (or have already) discontinuing it) - I looked up Buffalo yarn on Google and found lots of sites that sell actual Buffalo yarn (very pricey).
The wool that is shown in the picture is 6 strands and unspun - so when you knit it, you actually have to put a twist into it when you start so that it will continue to twist as you knit it up, otherwise, it will pull apart as you are knitting it.

Tuesday, October 23, 2007 - Huge amount of yarn

Becky, that's a huge pile of yarn! Buffalo yarn sounds mighty interesting. What do you think you will make from it? Did you say you can get some online? I'd love to find some somewhere. It looks lovely. Is it soft?
I'm sure alot of needy knitters and crocheters will love receiving what you donate.
As always, I love reading your blog....even when I don't comment.

Hi Teresa! Thanks for stopping by. =)
I figured with some of that Buffalo brand yarn, I will make myself some mittens and then felt them (those should be nice and toasty-warm for our cold Canadian winters).
You can find the White Buffalo yarn (which is a Canadian product) on ebay. I also found the buffalo yarn on numerous sites - just Google Buffalo yarn and you should see some sites that say something about American Buffalo yarn (sorry I'm not more accurate on my descriptions - I'm kind of tired right now and I haven't had any coffee).
The White Buffalo yarn isn't soft like the Bernat Harmony is, but then Bernat Harmony isn't real wool either - White Buffalo yarn is primarily intended for Cowichan-style sweaters, the bulky jacket-like sweaters with the geometric patterns and symbols that originated with the Cowichan people in western Canada.

Iced Coffee Syrup
≈ coffee
≈ water
≈ sugar
***IMPORTANT***: you need a percolator style coffee pot to make this.
DO NOT use a drip style coffee maker to make this syrup!!!!!
* Make one pot of coffee, then discard the grounds.
* Add fresh grounds, percolate again, with the coffee as liquid, not fresh water.
* Do this three times.
* To the finished coffee mixture, add one half the amount of sugar (if you end up with 3 cups coffee mixture, add 1 1/2 cups sugar).
* Mix until sugar is completely dissolved.
* To use: add 2 - 3 tablespoons of syrup to a 10 oz glass of milk, stir to mix and enjoy.
