Just Wondering

Posted in Daily Musings

I was sitting here wondering about the different ways that people homeschool their kids.  A friend of mine homeschools her kids for 3 weeks and then they take 1 week off - I think that is a great idea, but I am not sure if I could actually wrap my head around that (I still, very much, am still influenced by how things are done in the public school).  I also don't know how my kids would like that kind of schedule, I suppose we could try it for a month and see how it goes.

Please don't take this entry to mean that we are not happy with the way that our homeschool schedule is working for us, because it is working right now - for me, though, it is more about seeing how other things work (if you have been reading my blog for any length of time, you will have noticed the amount that I have changed the template on here, lol) I guess I just need to be able to change things from time to time

What kinds of schedules do all of you (who homeschool) follow?  What works for you?  What would you go back and change if you could?

I enjoy our homeschool, but for each season, I like a little different style. It helps me to enjoy the "season" at the moment, whether it is the weather, or the season of life my kids or I am in.

And hey, I am always moving furniture around! My mom always laughs about it... she comes out every couple of months and says... I see you changed things around again!

Warmly,
Melissa

I really liked how you put that:

"It helps me to enjoy the "season" at the moment, whether it is the weather, or the season of life my kids or I am in."

I really need to do more of that kind of thing around here (where we live, not my blog .... although that has possibilities too, *smiles*). Thanks, Melissa. =)

Thursday, October 11, 2007 - Homeschool Schedule

Posted by Anonymous

We do 12 weeks (Sept-Nov), take Dec off to enjoy the season and all the work involved, then another 12 weeks (Jan-Mar) and then 6 weeks (April and May) to wrap things up. We end on May 17th. We change things for each semester as well, although there are some consistencies. I think if something works for you don't change it, but if something isn't working for you a change is good. What I'm really finding this year is that my kids like to know what's happening and when but they like "surprises" too, like Tea Time (changing the environment), Wild Days, that kind of thing. And I think that is one benefit of homeschooling if we want to change things up, we can. Great question though Becky, looking forward to reading more responses. Lori D.

I think you are right about the change in environment, Lori. When I took the kids to Bible Study with me, on Tuesday, they took their school boxes with them and managed to get more done there than if we had been working at home!

I am like you and still in the public school mind set even though I have kind of shaken that off lately. We work 4 days a week a few hours a day on Curriculum. Some days I will just say no school today!!! To kind of break up the monotony of the day in day out stuff! We also have animals. But when I took them out of public school they were struggling with different things and was majorly stressed so we just slowed down and took it at their pace. I am also a furniture rearranger!!! LOL At least once every couple months some room gets all switched around!!!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Yeah, I like rearranging the furniture too, unfortunately (or maybe that would be 'fortunately' - at least according to my husband, lol) I have most of the rooms set up so that I can't rearrange them anymore =(. I suppose if I really, really wanted to, I could figure out a way to do it, lol.
Where there is a will, there is a way - right???????, lololol
Iced Coffee Syrup
≈ coffee
≈ water
≈ sugar
***IMPORTANT***: you need a percolator style coffee pot to make this.
DO NOT use a drip style coffee maker to make this syrup!!!!!
* Make one pot of coffee, then discard the grounds.
* Add fresh grounds, percolate again, with the coffee as liquid, not fresh water.
* Do this three times.
* To the finished coffee mixture, add one half the amount of sugar (if you end up with 3 cups coffee mixture, add 1 1/2 cups sugar).
* Mix until sugar is completely dissolved.
* To use: add 2 - 3 tablespoons of syrup to a 10 oz glass of milk, stir to mix and enjoy.
