We interrupt our regularly scheduled school week to bring you ...

Posted in Family Life

an overnight stay in the pediatrics department at the hospital, lol.

On Tuesday night at about 6:00 P.M. Joshua fell from a stool and broke his wrist - he and his sister had been playing 'keep away' with our dog, Jake.  From what I can gather, Josh had Jake's Booda Bone and was climbing up on the stool and Jake jumped up and grabbed onto the Booda Bone.  Jake's weight pulled down on Josh (over balancing him) and he (Jake) bumped into the stool that Josh was standing on - this caused the stool to go one way and Josh to come down, breaking his wrist.

I had Charlotte phone Don (he was in the city) to tell him to get home NOW!!!!!!!!  While he was hurrying home, I got things ready around the house (oven turned off, Jake put in his kennel, etc.) and I phoned the hospital to let them know what had happened and that we would be on our way in very shortly.  To make it easier on Josh's arm, I decided that I would get the triangle bandage from the first aid kit and make a sling out of it - did you know that there was absolutely no instructions on how to make a sling with a triangle bandage ...... what's up with that????????  So, I hurry over to the computer so that I can look online and find out how to tie one, geeesh, you would think that they would have instructions for those of us who have not taken a first aid course (note to self - take a first aid course!).  Anyway, I'm trying to get this thing tied when my hero arrives and takes over for me, lol (Don made it look so easy, lol).

So we are in the hospital and he is screaming in pain, the nurses can't give him anything because the Doctor had not issued an order to give him pain medication - I know that this is procedure, but you could hear him screaming all over the hospital!!!  Anyway, he finally gets some pain medication in him after he has had his x-rays (or maybe it was during, I can't really remember) and that settled him for maybe an hour.  About the time that he started getting uncomfortable again, the Doctor comes in and tells us that yes the wrist is broken and the break is bad, I mean really bad.  They normally see the growth plates in the x-rays, they couldn't in Josh's, so because of that they were very leery about trying to fix it at that hospital.  Sooooooo, they phone the hospital in the city and the orthopedic surgeon there tells them that Josh needs to get to their hospital.  Off to the hospital we go, dropping Charlotte off at Pam's on our way.  We get to the hospital, they get Josh settled (I stayed at the hospital with Josh and Don went home as he had to work the next day) and we end up waiting till 4:00 the next afternoon before he gets in to surgery for a 'Closed Fracture Reduction' - this means that they didn't have to cut him open to fix it, they didn't have to put in any pins .... they just pushed the bones around until they lined up - very glad that I wasn't there to watch/hear what they were doing!

We were discharged from the hospital last night and both Josh and I pretty much crashed as soon as our heads hit the pillow.  He has to go back on the 30th for a follow up, they may even put on a fiberglass cast (he has a plaster one on right now).

Oh, I forgot to say, the arm that he broke .... it was his right one, and guess which hand he uses, lol, yep, he is right handed, lol.

Iced Coffee Syrup

≈ coffee
≈ water
≈ sugar

***IMPORTANT***: you need a percolator style coffee pot to make this.
DO NOT use a drip style coffee maker to make this syrup!!!!!

* Make one pot of coffee, then discard the grounds.
* Add fresh grounds, percolate again, with the coffee as liquid, not fresh water.
* Do this three times.
* To the finished coffee mixture, add one half the amount of sugar (if you end up with 3 cups coffee mixture, add 1 1/2 cups sugar).
* Mix until sugar is completely dissolved.

* To use: add 2 - 3 tablespoons of syrup to a 10 oz glass of milk, stir to mix and enjoy.
