A thankful heart is a happy heart

I pray that all of you had a yummy Thanksgiving as well as a day that was full of remembrances of things and people to be thankful for.  As I reflect upon this last year and begin to prepare for the new year, I am humbled by the many things I have to be thankful for.   I could bore you with my list, but instead I want to encourage you to think about your own list.  God wants us to see Him present in our lives everyday.  We tend to rush through life, not bothering to look around to see Him very often.  We also tend to get bogged down in our own personal struggles and convince ourselves that He isn't there for us.  He is there, ever present and ever loving.  He may not manifest Himself in our lives the way we want him to, but He is there none the less.  He may show up in the sunset, in our child's laughter, in the smile of a stranger, in an unexpected phone call, in a simple thank you, in a warm embrace, in a dream come true and in an eternity spent with Him.

My husband, children and I have experienced so much loss in the last 5-7 years.  Whether it is the loss of loved ones, children, a home, our financial stability, a familiar community, or a friend, the pain is heart's core deep and sticks with you the rest of your life.  However, I won't hide my joy and excitement over the things that the Lord has chosen to turn around in our lives.  I am so thankful every time I look into the face of one of my 7 children, to know that God loves them and has plans for them.  I'm thankful that God  is finally beginning to walk us down the road of financial recovery.  It has been a long and scary road for us, but God will be victorious in the end.   I am so thankful for our being able to purchase a home while the world tries to convince us that it's impossible.  I'm thankful for the love of family and friends and the people the are committed to being in our lives despite distance and life's circumstances.  I am thankful that God is stronger that he that is in the world.   I'm thankful that in submission to God, I have found true freedom.

We are safely home from our journey and I have much to reflect upon.  The snow is falling, most of the children are napping and we are warm and together.  I"m thankful that my husband has a job and is beginning to be truly hopeful about our future.   Seeing my old friends warmed my heart.  I miss them so much, but am thankful that our relationships are weathering the test of distance.  I enjoyed seeing family and pray that the broken relationships begin to mend and thrive.  After a slippery and scary start, our journey home was filled with sunshine and happy kids.  However, Satan was willing to try and steal our joy and hubby and I ended up having a stupid argument part of the way home.   Our lives are far from perfect.  We are far from perfect, but we are forgiven.  Jesus' gift has given us so much freedom in Him and I'm thankful for my learning to be free.  As I've gotten older, I begun to realize that so much time is wasted in our struggle to be perfect and have perfect lives.  Our focus needs to be on what God is wanting our lives to look like and who He is wanting us to become.  We need to let go of the wheel and let Jesus drive.  Then we can enjoy the ride and He gets the glory.  That is freedom to me.

I want to thank those of you who have been praying for us.  I also want to thank those whom have always believed in us, in God in us and who have loved us without ceasing.  Our lives are truly richer because of you.  God bless all of you.

I'm off to start packing---I think.  I could possibly get sidetracked with a cup of coffee, a book and a blanket.  Hmmm.  That sounds pretty good.

The men went pheasant hunting over the weekend. A good time was had by all (except maybe for the pheasants )

Two of the puppies went to their new homes over the weekend. Only 3 to go.

We also had a surprise visit from my best friend & her boyfriend. They were vacationing in the area & came over Sunday after church. We had a really nice visit & went out for Mexican.  (Hey, JD!  the shop teacher with the yogurt was Mr. Lampman )

Visiting old friends & remembering Jr High & High school always makes me so glad I homeschool

Blessings.

Got this from my Farmer's Almanac e-newsletter...

Sky Watch

The planets and the Moon are putting on a show! For a few nights, brilliant Venus, bright Jupiter, and the crescent Moon blaze in a striking conjunction. They first formed their brilliant triangle last night, 15 degrees high, in the southwestern sky. The three celestial objectives will continue to stay close together as seen from Earth even though the planets are millions of miles away.

It's only FROST ... no snow.  Still beautiful, though.

I did get to start on the projects yesterday while Little A was napping and then again last night.  I hope to work on them some more today during nap time.

Yesterday, I was going to call about my Nutrimill...But instead, I got an email from the company telling me it was shipped.       There was a problem with the switch, so they replaced the motor section, and the cup.  It should be here by the end of the week.

Oh...I got a phone call on Sunday telling to be on the lookout for a BLESSING.  That should be here by the end of the week, also.

WOW!  God is so good!

I've had some requests, so, I will be posting a recipe / recipes this week.

Little A will be here soon, so I'd best get going.

Hope ya'll have a great day.

In Him,  Jill (the big sister)

In everything give thanks.

Advent- The Story Of The Jesse Tree

The Story Of The Jesse Tree

Jesse Tree Graphic Designed by Shalfleet

The Jesse Tree is named from Isaiah 11:1: "A shoot will spring forth from the stump of Jesse, and a branch out of his roots."  It is a vehicle to tell the Story of God in the Old Testament, and to connect the Advent Season with the faithfulness of God across 4,000 years of history. The Branch is a biblical sign of newness out of discouragement, which became a way to talk about the expected messiah (e.g., Jer 23:5). It is therefore an appropriate symbol of Jesus the Christ, who is the revelation of the grace and faithfulness of God.

The Israelites through the descendants of Abraham were chosen by God to be a light to the nations. When they were imprisoned by the Egyptians, they cried out to God for deliverance from their oppression. And God responded: "I have seen the misery of my people in Egypt, and I have heard their cry . . . I have come to deliver them from the Egyptians, and to bring them to a good land" (Exod 3:7-8). And so He entered history in a marvelous way to deliver them and bring them into a place where they could worship God and serve Him in peace and joy instead of serving Pharaoh in hard service. God promised to be with them and to be their God, and they would be His people.

But as they settled into the land that God had given them, "they forgot God, their Deliverer, who had done great things in Egypt" (Psa 106:21). As they grew secure in the land, they began to believe that "my power and the strength of my own hand have gotten me these things" (Deut 8:17). Even though God had raised up godly leaders like David, later kings and religious leaders served their own interests, and the people began to worship the false gods of the land. They even gave offerings to the idol ba’al, supposedly the god of rain and fertility of the land, thanking him for the prosperity they enjoyed.

But God grieved because "she did not know that it was I who gave her the grain, the wine, and the oil, and who lavished upon her silver and gold that they used for ba’al" (Hos 2:8). God had "planted [them] as a choice vine from the purest stock" (Jer 2:21) and had expected them to grow and flourish and carry out His purposes in the world. But they had degenerated into a wild bush with worthless fruit.

Because they had forgotten God, they also forgot the call of God to "do justice, love mercy, and walk humbly with your God" (Mic 6:8). God sent prophets to warn them of the consequences of failing to be His people. Amos warned them to "seek me and live" (5:4). Through Jeremiah, God promised them that if they would turn from their wicked ways He would bless them and be with them in the land (7:5-7). But he also said: "Take heed, O Jerusalem, or I shall turn from you in disgust, and make you a desolation" (6:8).

Some of the people longed for new leaders, a new "anointed" (Heb: meshiach; Eng: messiah) shepherd king like David who would help them to become what God had called them to be. But most of the people would not listen. They continued to worship the idols of ba'al. They continued to cheat the poor, steal from each other, neglect the needy, and do all manner of evil.

So God let them go their own way and suffer the consequences of their choices. The Babylonian armies came and destroyed the temple, the city of Jerusalem, the land, and took the people into slavery. The choice planting of God that had such promise, that God had tended so carefully and encouraged to grow, was cut down and became a mere stump (Isa 5:1-10).

But God did not give up on this people! Even though they had disobeyed, even though they had forsaken God for other gods, even though they had miserably failed to be His people and to let Him be their God, the God of Abraham, and Isaac, and Jacob still loved them. He had made a commitment to these people that He would not allow to be undone even by their rejection of Him.

He had already told them this through the prophets, but they had not understood then. Jeremiah had promised a day when God would again plant and build (31:28). And Isaiah had spoken of a time when God would cause a new shoot, a new king, to spring from the cut-off stump of the lineage of Jesse, David’s father (11:1). During the Exile, suffering under the consequences of sin, they had little reason to suppose that God would do anything new.  Still, the old promises echoed across the years, even if they could not believe them or even understand them.

In spite of their failures, in spite of their inability to envision a future beyond exile, there came a time when the prophets again announced a new thing, proclaiming "good tidings" to the people: "Here is your God!" (Isa 40:1-11). The Exile was ended! God would bring back to life a nation that was already dead (Eze 37). Long ago they had been slaves in Egypt, with nothing they could do to change their condition, and yet God had chosen to deliver.

So now, in the midst of their failure and hopelessness, God had again entered history as Deliverer. They would have another chance to be His people, not because they had earned it, no more than they had deserved it the first time; but simply because God in His grace had chosen to forgive.

They returned to the land. But across the years, they again struggled to obey and live up to their calling. They would never again slide into the worship of false gods. They had learned that lesson.  But the great kingdom that they dreamed of restoring remained only a dream. They had hoped for a new king like David to lead them into a glorious future in which they would rule the world. They hoped to throw off the control of the Greeks and later the Romans and become a great nation. But it didn’t happen. And they became disillusioned and discouraged.

So, they again hoped for God to raise up a new king, a new messiah, to deliver them from the oppression of the world. They longed for peace and deliverance from the tyranny of a sinful world. The prophets again brought the word of God to them, and promised a newness. Even though they struggled to understand and believe, they held onto the hope that the same God who brought slaves out of Egypt, and who brought exiles out of Babylon, could bring Messiah into the world!

We know the rest of that story. God was faithful to that promise, and a new King was born in Bethlehem. So we can exclaim with the old man Simeon: "My eyes have seen your salvation which you have prepared before all people, a light of revelation to the nations, and for glory to your people Israel!" (Luke 2:30-32).

But we also know that the world is still with us. Even though we can have Peace and Joy through the presence of Jesus Christ, we still long for deliverance from the oppression of sin in the world. We long for the full reign of the King, and the Kingdom of Peace that He will bring. So, while we celebrate the birth of the Branch, the new shoot from the stump of Jesse, we still anticipate with hope the Second Advent, and await the completion of the promise.

The Jesse Tree helps us retell this story, and express this hope.

Anniversaries

Next Monday is our 13th anniversary.

Have you ever really wanted a year to be over? I'm looking forward to a "new" year in our marriage. This last year has been the most difficult one we've had. I lost a baby early on & then this summer we went thru a very difficult course of events in our relationship. I know it doesn't really matter what year we are in. Our lives continue & events take place regardless of the time frame. But still, the control-freak part of me just wants a fresh start. A new year where nothing bad has happened. And this year we are expecting our new baby. A fresh start with a new baby, doesn't that sound good to you?

Blessings.

FOR TODAY...

Outside my window...On this cold, gloomy morning the snow has just started to fall.  Even as I watch it seems that the flakes are getting a little bigger.  Forecasters say we 'may' have up to 3" today.  It is - after all - December in Ohio.

I am thinking...that I will miss our wonderful church family that we love so dearly.  After 12-1/2 years of making the 70 mile round trip at least twice a week to our church, we have decided to look for a church closer to home after the first of the year.  It's breaking our hearts, but it has been confirmed in all 4 of our hearts.  I will, however, still attend the Seminary.

I am thankful for...a warm house on a cold, blustery day.

From the learning rooms...We are OFF for CHRISTmas break!  In our homeschool, we take off June, July and December instead of August.  Our long, wonderful break has begun!

From the kitchen...I'm considering potato soup.  My grandma's VERY simple Kentucky Depression-era version.

I am wearing...thick, warm socks, flannel pj bottom and a sweat shirt.  It's a cold morning!

I am creating...an empty corner so that Jenna and I can put up our CHRISTmas tree today!  Woohoo!!!

I am going...to the local Old Order farm and get my milk and brown eggs before the snow really kicks in.  I underestimated how much milk we would use during the Thanksgiving weekend and we squeaked out the last of it last night.

I am reading...Bible; still reading Pride & Prejudice.

I am hoping...that we will find great opportunities for ministry in which-ever church we 'land' in.

I am hearing...the T.V.

Around the house...Jenna and I will be putting up most of the CHRISTmas decorations today!  That's ALWAYS so much better than taking them down.

One of my favorite things...good food, fellowship and deep conversation with trusted Christian friends.

A few plans for the rest of the week:  putting up CHRISTmas decorations - inside and out, getting Maggie (our dog) trimmed, making some time to spend w/my mother.  Unfortunately, it may include a funeral as my 94 year old uncle (my mom's last brother out of 13 siblings) will probably pass away today or tomorrow.  I'm praying that the Lord works in ways that we don't understand while he is uncounscious and that somehow he will be Heaven-bound.

Here is picture thought I am sharing...
