Miracle Incubator

7:11 AM, Thursday, May 22, 2008 .. 0 comments .. Link

As I posted earlier in my "Weird Broody Hen" post, one of our hens died on top of some eggs she was supposed to be hatching for us.  At that point the chicks inside only had about one more week of growth left before they would have hatched.  After having no heat for at least two days, I didn't think there was any chance they would hatch, but DW put them in the incubator anyway.

Miracles still happen...

They started hatching yesterday and so far 5 out of 9 eggs have hatched.  I guess we have a miracle incubator.  When you read literature about incubating eggs, they act like strict temperature control is a must.  We're finding out that within reason, yes, you do need to maintain a constant temperature.  However, those chicks are not as fragile as I thought.  Even getting no heat for 2 days they still hatched, just a little later.  Amazing.
