This Weekend

We didn't get a whole lot done this weekend around the homestead.  DW had an appointment to have her hair cut and styled so most of the morning consisted of her getting ready and then me feeding and napping the kids while she was gone.  I don't begrudge her her hair appointment in the least.  She only gets it cut once per year, even though I'd let her go much more often than that.  It is not "short" but much shorter than it was.  It looks very cute.  You can't complain about a wife who only wants a haircut and some personal time to primp herself for Mother's Day.

In the afternoon we did some gardening.  The corn needed mulching and fertilizing pretty badly.  We were supposed to do that when it was knee high.  It was almost waist high before we did it.  We have had trouble growing corn these last two years.  This year we didn't heap the dirt up around the roots enough when it sprouted so they all started falling over when they got bigger.  They're growing fine, but falling over.  We had to rig up a fancy system of stakes and string to keep them upright.  We keep asking ourselves if all this trouble is worth a few ears of corn, but I LOVE fresh sweet corn-on-the-cob.  I would plant more if we had the room.

We also have devised a system of weeding in the garden.  If you look at the pictures of our garden, there's a left and right side.  We plan on weeding, fertilizing, and mulching one side per week.  We'll start with the beds that need it the worst, and continue until the end of the week.  If we're not done by the next week, oh well...on to the other side.  Maybe this will help us stop neglecting some of the beds.  We do spend a lot of time in our garden (about 3-4 evenings per week) but we love it, and the kids have fun helping us or playing while we garden.  It's sort of recreational as well as productive.  I feel better doing that than sitting in front of the T.V.  The garden has really become something DW and I can do together and we really enjoy the time with each other.

I also may have killed my lawnmower this weekend (yeah, the really expensive one).  It ran low on oil (not out completely, but low) made a wierd rattling sound like something had come loose and was bouncing around inside the engine, and died.  I can't get it to restart, so I'll have the joy of taking it to the repair shop this week.  Hopefully it's not totaled.
