This and That
We got some rain last night. It is always a blessing in our semi-arid area.
David left yesterday afternoon for the Bear's Paw Mountains near Havre for a range science school for bankers. He will be there till Wednesday, studying useful and noxious plants on a ranch. Eventually the bankers will examine the ranch's books. Apparently, they are well fed while they are there and they camp out the whole time, so it must be fun.
Maria returned from a Youth Leadership Camp at the C Bar N camp in the Rocky Mountains. She had a wonderful time and is still mentioning people she met and acquaintances renewed as well as some really great Bible teaching. It is good to have her home.
Sister Lori's blog has a great article about her family's giving up television as well as other forms of electronic entertainment.
We have been tv free for quite some time. In the book 40 Acres and No Mule written by Janice Holt Giles, she mentioned that tv, more than anything else, functions as an instructor in our homes. The book mentioned above was written in 1951 and later copies contain a forward she added in the mid-1960s. She found that tv had negative effects on the hill people of Kentucky. Books I have read about other cultures, such as the native people of Alaska, mentioned the negative power of television when introduced to a culture.
The only place I see tv now is at the gym. Usually people choose a travel channel or a variety of cooking shows. One day I was amazed to see a woman on a cooking show preparing a recipe while showing a large amount of cleavage. I wondered why she had chosen to dress that way and figured there was no chance she would be frying chicken that day, with "the girls" out there. How weird....

I would love to throw the TV out the window. However, that is not something that my husband is willing to do. He wants to watch the local news occasionally, or even a sporting event every now and then). Other than those things, which aren't often, we don't watch TV, but only use it for watching movies that we rent from the library...or some that we own. But, believe me, if I could do it without rebelling against my husband, the TV would be gone!!

We have lived on and off with TV. When we do have it we are really picky. But I have noticed lately that the programmers are not careful about the commercials and there are some really unsavory at best commercials on during family shows or kids shows. My son who is 5.5 is acutely aware if I don't get it switched or off on time and will say things like "They're being naughty, huh, Mommy?" Pretty sad when a 5 year old recognizes it is naughty but adults can't. And I laughed when I read about the cleavage and the cooking show. I have noticed that CHRISTIAN women who are well dressed are sharing their cleavage with the whole world. I notice ladies at church who bend over and you can see straight through. My family came out of extreme legalism, so I am very careful not to be judgmental, but I think there comes a time when God's holiness is God's holiness and something has to change. It makes me sad to see the place we have made for ourselves in the world. So, the TV I could give up...but the computer, that would be HARD! It's my connection to the outside world. And I have to be careful that I don't spend too much time on it doing "nothing" when I could be praying, reading the Word, cleaning or being creative in some way!

My Dad and his wife have no TV and use very little electricty. I always love to visit there. It is so peaceful.
I would get rid of our TV if hubby was willing. I have been watching way to much TV lately so I'm going to try and cut it down. I also need to try and cut down the TV watching with my kids. It make it harder when you don't have support.
There are so much on tv that is absolutly unipropiate. You can't even watch comercials with your children. You could be watching a perfectly decent show but then be enterupted by a comercial that is rated R.
