Summer Reading
Isn't it a pleasure to discover an author whose writing takes you to new places and leaves you desiring to read more of their thoughts?
I just finished reading 40 Acres and No Mule by Janice Holt Giles and am looking forward to reading another of the several books she wrote.
This book was written during the winter of 1950-51. Mrs. Giles had raised a daughter as a single mother before she met and married her husband Henry. She and Henry had lived in the city in Kentucky for a few years before they tired of the fast pace. Janice followed her husband to the place of his roots, the hills of Kentucky, where they settled for the rest of their lives.
The book covers the observations Janice made of her new home and lifestyle, noting some of the customs she found different as well as her own mannerisms that her new neighbors found to be unusual.
40 Acres and No Mule left me with a desire to read more of Janice's descriptions.
I would like to suggest two wonderful book sources that are very appropriate for Christians and will be a great resource for homeschoolers.
The first is Cumberland Books, found at www.cumberlandbooks.com
They have a great variety of books on the agrarian and simple lifestyles, as well as a children's section. Many of their selections comment on cultural trends. They carry several of Janice Holt Giles' books.
The second source is Bethlehem Books, found at www.bethlehembooks.com
I haven't yet ordered from this company, which sells children's books, most which were written a number of years ago. Just reading through their titles and descriptions of books available, I can tell that their books differ greatly from the fluff offered to children in today's market. They carry 4 of Rebecca Caudill's titles. We have one and I will be happy to acquire more. She wrote children's books in the early part of the 20th century and captures family and farm life in a delightful way.
I'll likely be silent for awhile. We have a graduation party coming next weekend that will take some preparation. Happy Springtime!

Congrats to you all on the upcoming graduation! Always a bittersweet time! Wonderful to see our children grow and mature into such capable adults - but darn, can't they stay little just a bit longer?!
