How Would You Spend It?
Last week Maria, Jonathan and I made a necessary trip to Great Falls for some groceries. Maria wanted to stop at the mall to go to a couple of stores as well. Jonathan and I decided to go to Sears and look around while she was doing her shopping.
While we were in Sears, he was mesmerized by a wall of large high definition television sets. They are very eye catching with their sharp, clear pictures. I noticed that the one we were looking at, a 40 inch high definition, flat screen model had a sticker price of $1900. Honestly, if the salesman had offered it to me for free, I would have said, "no thanks".
We have a 16 year old tv in our basement that is hooked up to a DVD player and we enjoy some carefully chosen movies during the cold winter months. An older Disney movie Charlie the Lonesome Cougar is a favorite of ours.
I started imagining that if we were suddenly given $1900 what types of things I would choose to buy. (Honestly, I know saving it would be the wisest choice.)
In real life, David and I would make the choice together, but in my imagination, I came up with some ideas.
Our roof needs to be replaced and $1900 would buy a lot of roofing supplies. A second bathroom in our house is something we have talked about. David's chainsaw is older and it is getting increasingly difficult to find parts when it breaks down, so a replacement would be a good choice too.
Recently I read in the newspaper that before long the time when come when all tv will be broadcasted digitally. There is talk that the government will assist families who can't afford to buy translators to be able to obtain them. That is the most ridiculous concept I have heard in a long time and it angers me to the point that I pray it won't happen.
Just for fun, though, how would you choose to spend a sudden windfall of $1900?

At this point I would pay off dr bills for the surgery my dh just had and probably do what I always do with extra money, stock the pantry and freezer.

My family wants a larger tv. I do not. I am not a tv watcher and for the most point see it as a waste of time, an energy drainer and a subtle way for us to let our heart become open to what is out there ( "oh, thats not really that bad," thing) I do like to watch a movie now and then and catch the news, PBS ect.
It is so easy to see something and justify it as a need instead of a want. That is the world we live in.
With extra money, I would like to pay off bills, and yes stock the pantry too. We did get some back from taxes this year and we are using it to fly back to Virginia and home to NY. It was a hard decision as we need things(ok, some wants are in there too) for the house, Jonathan is starting school in the fall, we have some debt. We decided to use it to see family, as my father is older and we have an aunt that is sickly and all of our family lives in the East. We are using this time as a grad. party for Jonathan plus visiting a few colleges and friends and family. The hard part is my husbands sister just decided she is getting married in Nov. and we are going to have to go again in the fall. It gets expensive for a family of 5 to fly.
Well . . . .

It would probably go towards paying off our car early. Lord willing, that will happen this summer anyway. :)
Otherwise, savings. We have some, but not a lot. $1500 of that could also be used to cover our midwife's bill in November! ;)
So many options!

I have absolutely no question about what I would do with $1,900. It would go into our adoption fund, getting us a little closer to our dream of adopting a baby.
And as for TVs, I wouldn't care at all if ours broke. I could easily live without it.

Regretably the tv signals will all be broadcast digital by next year. They were supposed to be finished this year but they gave a one year delay. A friend of ours works for a broadcast company that just bought all new analog equiptment a couple years ago. It will all have to be replaced. Personally I think this is a terrible idea because most places that do convert are able to broadcast both signals. Digital and analog. Like cell companies, I think it should be a dual broadcast until people are able to afford to switch.
As for personal tv's the goverment is planning on sending out a coupon for $40 off the first two converters per family. That will put the cost of the converter at $20 each for the first two.

The only think I watch on TV is 700 Club each day - on my 28 yr. old 5" 5 lb. black & white TV. I take it in my sewing room and have a great time sewing & listening to the program at 2 p.m. if I'm home. As for the $1900 I would get new windows for our house - that would probably take most or more of it. God bless! Jill
