We've been raising goats for several years now and I've always pasteurized my milk. However recently I have thought about drinking it raw.  I know by pasteurizing I eliminated the chance of e-coli but I also know we loose many medicinal benefits from doing so.  I was wondering if any of you ladies drink raw cows or goats milk.   Did you have any trouble going from pasteurized to raw, more emotional verses physical?  Its hard for me to get past years of indoctrination of needing to pasteurized even though I really would like to quit.  Any words of wisdom and experience would be great.

Thanks

Lea

I would love to say that this is what we do, but alas we have no cow or goat to give us the fresh milk I would love to have. I know I have an Uncle that drinks fresh, raw goats milk and he loves it. I tried it once, and thought it was bitter...but then again I have to take into consideration that I am used to ultra pasturized cows milk.

Hi, I have a goat who is going to kid in late February or early March. And I can't wait, so we can have goat milk. I haven't had very much of it, but what I have had has been raw. And the fresh cow's milk that I have had before has been raw. I know what you mean about the emotional reservations. I had a harder time when I tasted raw goats milk than raw cows milk. But after I got over the "it's coming from a goat", I was ok. I really don't have any real insites for you. But I do not plan on pasterizing our goat milk. Elizabeth

We have used goat milk for our primary source of milk for about a year now. When we started with the dairy goat we drank it "raw". I cook with it raw still. I did purchase a pasturizer and have since pasturized all the milk we drink. I have found that the taste of the milk changes slightly when pasturized. My family liked the taste of the pasturized milk more. I'm still not sure if it was just the thought of it or not. I personally don't have any reservations drinking raw cow or goat milk as long as it comes from my herd and I know how the animals are taken care of. I'd like to address the bitter taste that so many refer to with goats milk...the taste of goats milk has a very direct relationship with how the goats are fed and what they are allowed to eat. I have found that if you feed a good dairy pellet and alphalfa hay the milk is very sweet and most people cannot taste the difference between it and cows milk. Now on the other hand I have fed bermuda hay to the same dairy goats and within 24 hours I can't drink the milk...very strong and bitter tasting. So if you have tried goats milk and it tastes off it can be easily fixed by changes in diet. So if you don't have the flavor you desire give it some time and make adjustments to their diet...you will find a method that works best for you. You probably already know all this though-lol- I hope this has helped some...if you have any questions I can help you with let me know and I'll try to answer them. > blessings> faithfarm

I have both goats and cows over the years. I have raised a large family on raw milk. We never had any problems. Our animals were well fed and we were very careful and clean in handling the milk. Some of my children do not absorb clacium well. When we were without raw milk they would get muscle cramps, and I would treat them with powdered dolomite until the cow would freshen again. The same problem with my husband, This is an individual decision and praying about it will give you your own answer. Blessings...jodalton

and we switched straight from store bought pasteurised to home produced raw just like that. We didn't have any health problems whatsoever, if you are clean in your milking, and you know your goats, I honestly don't think it is a big deal.
Would I drink raw milk from one of those big commercial herds of cows half of whom are sick and all of whom are full of goodness knows what chemical?
NO WAY!

We drink raw cows milk from OrganicPastures.com, but have also enjoyed raw milk from a goat dairy in a nearby town. The goat milk did not taste different to me, though my husband thought it had a slight after taste. We both liked it though, as did our eight children.
