Wrestling with God

"Then the man said, "Your name will no longer be Jacob, but Israel, because you have struggled with God and with men and have overcome." - Genesis 32:28

Jacob had spent his life manipulating to get his way. He was very good at it. He knew when to hit someone at their weakest point to get what he wanted and when to lie and smooth the road a little to tilt the scales in his direction.

However, those decisions had cost him dearly. He had to leave home and run for his life and his own uncle had manipulated and used him to marry both his daughters and labor for free. Now he was to meet up again with his brother Esau who was still very angry over Jacob stealing their father's blessing for the birthright.

Jacob became very aware of his real character and realized he needed help - much help. He knew God had promised to bless him. Yet, he knew he had never given God control to do what he promised. He was ever fearful and would always intervene in his own way to manipulate or control events for fear God wouldn't come through. He never waited on God. This instance wasn't much different. In an effort to placate his brother, he had sent large gifts ahead of him to try and manipulate Esau with material goods so Esau wouldn't pursue him.

Jacob realized that yet again he was venturing to do things without God. This was serious and everything seemed to hang in the balance. He knew he must change. He had to know God was with him and that he was not acting alone.

He went to a solitaire place and spent the night wrestling with God. He wanted to change. He wanted to be blessed and he would not let go until that happened. In the end, he received not only the blessing, but the character change he was seeking. The man asked him, "What is your name?" "Jacob," he answered. Then the man said, "Your name will no longer be Jacob, but Israel, because you have struggled with God and with men and have overcome."

It's interesting to note that God changed his name from Jacob: “swindler, thief, stealer” to Israel: “one who struggles with God and overcame”. God literally changed who Jacob was. Israel was to become a mighty man and nation and a person the people could see the character of God through.

We need to get to that place. We need to wrestle our issues out with God and not let go until He changes us and gives us His blessing. It's hard work and it requires determination not to let go and give up until He does what He has promised in us. He will change us. He will overcome the issues in our lives that limit His blessings on us. Our wrestling is a process and isn't always pleasant. It's a battle between our nature and God's changing power. It's a process of letting go and letting God take control. It's distrusting our fears and our own efforts and letting God prove to us His ability to lead our lives. Jacob's life is our example. He will change our character and make us into "one who struggles with God and overcomes".

Trading on God's Gifts

"And unto one he gave five talents, to another two, and to another one; to every man

according to his several ability; and straightway took his journey."

--Matt. 25:15.

The parable of the talents ... has a personal and individual application to every man, woman,
and child possessed of the powers of reason. Your obligation and responsibility are in proportion to
the talents God has bestowed upon you. . . .
When the master of the house called his servants, he gave to every man his work. The whole family
of God are included in the responsibility of using their Lord's goods. Every individual, from the lowliest and most obscure to the greatest and most exalted, is a moral agent endowed with abilities for which he is accountable to God. . . . The spiritual, mental, and physical ability, the influence, station, possessions,
affections, sympathies, all are precious talents to be used in the cause of the Master....
Let the businessman do his business in a way that will glorify his Master because of his fidelity. Let
him carry his religion into everything that is done, and reveal to men the Spirit of Christ. Let the mechanic
be a diligent and faithful representative of Him who toiled in the lowly walks of life in the cities of Judea.
Let every one who names the name of Christ so work, that man by seeing his good works may be led to
glorify his Creator and Redeemer. . . .
Those who have been blessed with superior talents should not depreciate the value of the services
of those who are less gifted than themselves. The smallest trust is a trust from God. The one talent,
through diligent use with the blessing of God, will be doubled, and the two used in the service of Christ will be increased to four; and thus the humblest instrument may grow in power and usefulness. The earnest purpose, the self-denying efforts, are all seen, appreciated, and accepted by the God of heaven.... God alone can estimate the worth of their service and see the far-reaching influence of him who works for the glory of his Maker.

Plans and a Purpose

"Who has saved us and called us to a holy life - not because of anything we have done but because of his own purpose and grace. This grace was given us in Christ Jesus before the beginning of time." - 2 Timothy 1:9

How many times do we put "conditions" on God's plans for us? We somehow come to the conclusion that we have to DO something to merit God's goodness. We may even see a plan God has for us in our lives, but feel the pressure to "perform" in order to achieve that goal.

Obedience is important in living a life of peace, but sometimes we take that to the extreme and try to put God's plans for us as conditional to our works. We remove God from the equation. We forget that we cannot obey God without God. It is impossible without His working in us.

2 Timothy states this. It states that God had already called us to a holy life, to a life filled with plans and goodness, not because of our own doings but because of God's own desired plans and His grace towards us. The beauty of God's love is that He sent Jesus ahead of us so that His plans for us could still be achieved through Him even when we would stumble or fall.

That fact should give each of us hope. Because of Jesus blood, all powers of the enemy have been broken. We just have to accept it. I don't have to earn God's plans. They are already there. I don't have to "perform" for God to be good to me. He already is. His love has already provided all I need to be set free. I just have to accept it. Yes, obedience is action indicating my acceptance, but it's the Holy Spirit in me that performs that task. Titus says, "he saved us, not because of righteous things we had done, but because of his mercy. He saved us through the washing of rebirth and renewal by the Holy Spirit." The working of the Holy Spirit in me sets me free and changes my heart to fit into God's plan for my life. That's the whole secret the enemy wants me to forget.

Start your day by asking for the Holy Spirit to enter in. That is the key. Ask for God to perform his promise in Titus 3:5 for you today. His plans for you exceed your abilities. Otherwise, you might get the wrong idea that YOU somehow had something to do with it. He wants to be good to you and wants you to have a true understanding of His love. Don't let that moment pass today.

Trusting In the Dark

"The fundamental fact of existence is that this trust in God, this faith, is the firm foundation under everything that makes life worth living. It's our handle on what we can't see." - Hebrews 11:1 (The Message)

How many times have you looked ahead and wondered just what on earth was going on? What you see is NOT what you expected.

I can relate to that feeling. Some time ago, the Lord started to reveal His plan to me and began again the call on my life that actually began when I was a little girl. But this time the dream was much clearer and much more desired. I knew God had called me to serve Him, but that my heart's desire was not to serve alone. He had given me a husband whom I assumed God would use to serve with me. Together God would use us in some form of ministry or service - big or small didn't matter. I just knew we were called to serve the Lord.

I came right up to that door of my dreams, and as I was about to step across the threshold my husband was suddenly killed in a freak motorcycle accident. It left me paralyzed. I literally didn't know what to do next. All God’s plans and dreams came crashing down and I couldn't understand how I could possibly go on. Had I misunderstood? Had I been wrong? I could not see before me, much less comprehend what had happened behind me.

Now, some years later I still am learning where God's plan is taking me. I don't know more then the day ahead. But God has taught me so much about Himself. See, it wasn't until I was blinded and couldn't see that I began to trust and fully depend on God. When I could see where I was going, I didn't feel the need to totally come to God for everything. I held back on some stuff- mostly the small stuff. But now, that has changed. I have learned that God's promises are true and that even though it may not make sense, I have never been without. What's better is that my security and worth is in something that will not be moved or taken from my life. Jesus lives forever and since He is not temporal, satan cannot steal Him from me. Therefore, I am more grounded now then I was before my husband died. That faith in Jesus makes my life worth living. Better yet, I am excited for my future and seeing what God's plan for me is - since His promises never fail.

I am human and at times I wonder where my life is heading and start doubting. But then I am reminded of my faith in Jesus. He has never left me nor forsaken me. He has been with me through every horror and miracle in my life. If He says He will restore me, then He will restore me. Hebrews 11:1 has greater meaning for me because I now realize what my faith in Jesus does for me and how much armor it gives me against the enemy.

Satan is a defeated foe through my Savior's blood. When the tunnel of life is dark and its darkness is pressing in on me, I cling to the precious promises of my God (2 Peter 1:4) and it makes my life worth living. I can handle not seeing because I know He does and He has never left me nor forsaken me and He never will.

A Prayer of Faith

"Some men came, bringing to him a paralytic, carried by four of them. When Jesus saw their faith, he said to the paralytic, "Son, your sins are forgiven." - Mark 2:3,5

The story of the paralytic is a powerful story for intercession. The paralytic was indeed physically disabled and crippled. But, what ailed him most was the feeling that he was lost and that God was unable to save him. He did not have the faith or belief that "If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness." It was the condition of his heart that caused him the most pain, not his physical condition. He stopped believing, became despairing, and was without hope.

But that didn't stop God. He sent four friends to this paralytic who would believe for him. "A few days later, when Jesus again entered Capernaum, the people heard that he had come home. So many gathered that there was no room left, not even outside the door, and he preached the word to them. Some men came, bringing to him a paralytic, carried by four of them. Since they could not get him to Jesus because of the crowd, they made an opening in the roof above Jesus and, after digging through it, lowered the mat the paralyzed man was lying on. When Jesus saw their faith, he said to the paralytic, "Son, your sins are forgiven."

What a beautiful story of the love of friendship!

These friends were persistent. They did not give up. Though the odds were against them and others around them were indignant that they would bring their friend before Jesus without following the "correct" protocol, they came anyway. Nothing would stop them from bringing this man to the feet of Jesus. When Jesus saw their faith, "he said to the paralytic, "Son, your sins are forgiven." The faith of those men saved their friend. And it didn't stop there. Jesus moved on and healed the man's physical being as well. Jesus believes in complete healing, not a partial one.

The same opportunity is for us today. "If any man see his brother sin a sin which is not unto death, he shall ask, and he shall give him life for them that sin not unto death." - 1John 5:16 Many are in need of our prayers and our faith on their behalf. When we are diligent and do not give up in finding a way to bring them to the Saviour, our prayers will be answered and "Whoever turns a sinner from the error of his way will save him from death and cover over a multitude of sins."

When was the last time you became persistent for the salvation of someone's soul? When was the last time you wouldn't stop interceding until you knew that person was at the feet of Jesus to be healed. God is calling us to become a "paralytic's believing friend".  Our efforts combined with God's power can move mountains and bring complete healing to a despairing soul.
