2006-Feb-22 - Hunting & Target Practice at the Ol' Homestead....
So--how many hunters and range shooters are out there?
We enjoy hunting....I took a nice buck off the back porch fall before last....deer is excellent meat, as is ELK......very tasty, and very lean....MMMMm!!!!!!!!!
I have never bow hunted....but would like to learn...my husband is a great teacher--and promises to teach me someday when I am ready...(Hunting off the porch is so much easier and less messy--IMHO) I prefer the 30/30 for it's accuracy, & ease. I would like to learn, with the bow tho--just so I know how.
We enjoy the competition of target practicing....and have an area here (a big stack of railroad ties) to shoot at--so it's fun for us to see just who is the most accurate on any given day.
But in the serious nature of the gun as a firearm, weapon and tool...do you hunt....could you ? Do you know how to use a gun, for yours and your families safety purposes ?
My Dad taught all 4 of his girls to use a firearm, and use it RIGHT. He always preached safety, and we knew --WE KNEW--you never touched firearms without him--We never even thought to.
But as women--what if the spouse wasn't around--what if the point in time comes where you have to hunt--or butcher---where it isn't optional? I gotta say--I am not one to gut a deer. My husband does it. I'll happily cook it, but don't really want to do that part of gutting, cutting & skinning, etc. If I had to? I'd be in sorry shape--because I have never done it. I have listened to my husband and Dad talk to me about it--so I have somewhat of an idea....but to do it, that's another story. In this case I think hands on is really the only way.
This is something I feel I should learn, just like operating the chain saw, chopping wood, changing water filters.......stuff my husband does do.....but I should know HOW to do. I do enjoy chopping wood, don't care for the water filter job, or the chainsaw so much--but I do know how to confidently do/use them.
Just curious if they are any hunters or firearm enthusiasts out there ?
:)

My Husband is a wannabe hunter. Each year he talks about getting his hunting license, but so far he hasnt done it! We both can shoot. I can shoot a rifle and a .22 shot gun. My brother taught me! Most of it was target practice. I did go squirrel hunting once with one of my brothers, but didnt get anything...it was very cold and I wasnt dressed for the weather! I had fun though. I love target shooting.

I was raised around guns and hunting, I dont care to shoot anything, but if I were hungry? yes I would shoot it... If I or my family were in danger, without a doubt I would shoot the 2 or 4 legged critter. I dont have any problem cutting meat up to freeze, I have done this all my life it seems.. Dad never took his deer to the processors.
I do shoot guns, I love to plink with the 22 and enjoy pistols as well.. but my real love its my muzzleloader, I started out with a great plains rifle, but wanted one that had a swamped barrel they are easier to hold the barrel up out of the dirt.. so I built one...Its my baby... If you care to see it I will post some pics of it in my blog

I only go out to shoot things like gophers/ground squirrls, skunks and things like that and only for the safty of my family and animals. I find it hard to go out with all the kids in tow but still at times I do make it out.
I've never gutted an animal and I get light headed when we do C-sections or other operations on our cows. I also wonder if I could get all the glands removed.
