Our Little Homestead

2006-Jun-12 - Recently on the 'stead........

There's never a dull moment around here .......that is one thing we can count on.

Sunday morning I was up and heard ol' Cooter (the dog) outside barking from his pen.....so I go downstairs....and low and behold here is a dog walking outside his pen.......hey, he got out.......no.......that's a COYOTE! OH MY, Cooter is in his pen going absolutely bonkers....and this Coyote is walking right by it on his way to the chickens.....Cooter (aka Superpup) breaks THRU the wire fencing...and chases this Coyote up the mountainside....the Coyote turns on him, and back down they come......by this time I am going for the hardware....and waking Marc up in the process who never misses the chance for a clean shot at a chicken robbin' coyote.....and now here is Cooter on the back porch growling at this Coyote....who is sitting up the mountainside about 20 or so feet just eyeing Cooter and the Chicken Pen......pondering his next move....

His next move was running his tail off as the 30/30 blasted his way.....haven't seen him since. :)

Now.......the weirder (is that even a word?) part.....later that day we are outside....and about every 15/30 minutes one of the chickens is out of the coop area (they are fenced as to keep them ALIVE) we are perplexed .......HOW are they getting out ?!?!  We herd em back in...Cooter (Red Healer) loves this part! Well, after about 8 rounds throughout the afternoon with this......we realize.........the coyote (s) must of been down in the night or before Cooter was let out....and literally cut thru the chickenwire....it does look like someone took wire cutters and just snipped a straight line right thru a section of wire.

It got repaired.......no more Houdini Chickens.

We got some bread made......canned our first batch of Strawberry Jam (used Pomona's Pectin....it turned out WONDERFUL......and I used not quite 1 C honey, instead of the original recipes 7 C of white sugar!!!!) everyone is loving the Jam....I got laundry soap made today......caught back up on laundry....tomorrow is candle day.....we sold a ton of em at the farmers market last week....!!  We have to also get some gift crates put together  for a local place that requested them...and we'll take a few to the market....we'll get em up on the website as soon as we get some of those done. :)  Lots of FUN!  Wednesday is Farmers Market Day........Thursday is Gardening Day.....it needs some serious weedin'!  We have radishes, corn, peppers, tomatoes, flowers, strawberries, chili peppers, carrotts.......sunflowers........and more coming up.........YAY!!!!!  If I don't get it weeded tho, we'll have NOTHING....the weeds will soon take over....... ;)

That's about it .......I am beat......its' about nappy time.  Have a great eve!!

Blessings

Lisa
