Our Little Homestead

2006-May-12 - Today

It's not quite 5 am out West......sun is just peeking over the mountains, rays of light are streaming thru the back of the property, down the draw.  Beautiful....we are 'supposed' to get some nice almost summerlike weather the next few days.

It's been busy on the homestead, as usual...the Farmers Market is going well--lots of community support~neat to meet folks....and we do bartering amongst vendors, which is always fun.  I traded a candle for a handcarved applewood spoon (I love wooden spoons)the first week of the market...came home this week, with a huge bag of greens--variety of lettuces and spinach, a couple cherry tomato plants, and 5 raspberry starts--not to mention a nice aloe vera plant....for $6 out of pocket.  Barterin and tradin' is always fun! The local (right behind the Market set up area) Natural Food store owner has picked up our candles to sell in shop...and she came over and bought at my stand too--so thats nice.  We sold some of our Rhubarb, bare root strawberries, and candles of course...the girls and I are enjoying it.

For Keepers yesterday I showed the girls how to make homemade mancotti...today we'll work on their breadmaking, I am blessed they love to work in the kitchen with Mama!

The man of the house was laid off last week (in between jobs) and got my huge garden spot tilled up and fence posts put in, and brought home the huge backhoe 'thing' and dug up the end of the drive to put in a gate.....got the posts concreted in...and we were letting them set, for a couple days.  Monday, a woman comes driving up this long drive to the house...and wants 'directions' (?--this seemed odd, for a variety of reasons--which I'll spare you) anyhow--as I am telling her she's not even close to what she says she's lookin for (to which she replies "I know".....(?) I see one of the posts is down, at the end of the drive....?!?!?!?  WHAT???  It was just up not 15 minutes earlier when I was outside......

She can tell I am looking beyond her, at this....I say (more to myself than her) I can't believe someone took out a post......she says.....OH, that must be what I ran over....I thought I bottomed out on a rock. (?!?!!) I am in awe......the post only stuck up 5 FEET OUTTA THE GROUND.....how could you NOT see it.?!?!  At this point I am pretty sure she's, ah, "medicated"....I inform her she's at the wrong place and shut the door.

WOW--what happened when folks do stuff like this....?  We live very rurally...and most folks respect property rights...as long as our drive is.....I find it hard to believe someone would randomly pull in our drive to 'ask directions'....the property across and down the road (she would of run into first) the house is much more visable...and a short drive.  I almost wonder if something odd was up (besides her 'medicated' state) with the FOR SALE sign out at the road.....people are weird, and I am thankful to be armed--that's all I can say. Grrrr.......

Anyhewwwwww.........yesterday the girls and I got a bunch of bare troot strawberries in the ground.....finally....it had been freezing every night recently--but hopefully it's over......we have radishes, onions, beans, corn,  sweet peas, cucumbers and more starts to get into the ground....we'll have to look up the weather forecast online and see what the big prediction is going to be....but we've seen it snow here in June--so it may not be quite time yet. ;)

Marc went back to work Monday--longggggggg days......and is off today--he's already up and gone fishin this mornin'--I am sure he'll enjoy--it's nice to have such clean beautiful mountain lakes to fish on --and they boast some gorgeous rainbow trout!

We have a full day planned again today....but of the best kind......spending the day workin, schoolin, the chores...orders to fill...livin & learnin' together....bakin bread...probably work on some garden fencing, and the girls want to sew. I am BLESSED!

Best get at Mt Washmore, and let the chickies out and feed them...the children will be up soon....:)

Have a blessed day!

Lisa
