I wonder ....

Any one grow worms? How *easy* is it to do? Do you sell them? We're looking for something our 7 & 8 year old boys can do & this would be right up their alley LOL ..... most likely all the children would want to be involved though LOL

For those who are unsure of what vermiposting is ...... basically you're a worm farmer. You build (or buy) bins, lay some bedding (newspaper shredded, wet & wrung out) ..... lay some food in the bin (banana peels, tea bags, orange peels .... they love fruit) ... then put another layer of wet/wrung out newspaper .... for preventing fruit flies ... the worms eat the compost items & turn it in to fertilizer .... they also breed quickly (depending on the type of work). You can make money at this but I'm not sure how much or how often.

A group of fish is called a school .... a group of cattle is a herd ........ well ..... a group of worms is called a squirm.

Hmmm ...... maybe we could name our homestead "Squirm Acres" LOL ....... or ...... ""Wiggler Acres" .......... "Inch Acres" ? We'll have to toss those around for a while LOL

I bought the can-o-worms and keep it in our basement - they are very low maintenance. Mainly I use the drained water for indoor plants & sometimes use the solids to mix with things I plant. It really gives houseplants a boost. We've had it nearly 2 years & they are only filling the 2nd layer up but they seem healthy & hungry. I just feed them every few days - I'd say go for it. Your boys would enjoy it. Jill

We are planning on raising worms in our rabbit manure. I know it doesn't sound very nice but it is supposed to keep the smell down.

About Me

We are a family of 9 right now. Our dreams of homesteading have taken flight .... even if the plane is still sitting on the runway, at least we have flight plans. We home school, home church and run home businesses. Our favorite thing to do is spend time together <GASP> Yes, we actually enjoy each others company. Some times we just sit, chatting ... other times we're watching the races ..... at times we're reading books ..... and other times we're just playing with what ever we can find. This blog will be used to keep track of the journey we're on .... the journey of life ... I'll post about many things .... like ....... drama skits my children create, how to's of homesteading (or maybe the how-not-to's as I find them out), home school projects, lessons and findings, basic thoughts running through my brain ... and probably everything in between. I look forward to your wisdom, input & friendship.
