Homesteading: A Woman's Journey

Washing Laundry by Hand

10:14, Monday, July 14, 2008 .. Posted in Family Blessings .. 3 comments .. Link

Over the weekend, the belt on our washing machine finally wore out and would no longer spin the clothes dry.  This meant that we had to wring out the laundry by hand that we had already washed. No big deal.  Then, my dear husband took the belt off so he can take it to a shop & buy a new one.  Everything seems to be going great ........until........

Today, I was faced with a situation.  Our 2 little ones are cloth diapered.  We only have enough for one and a half days of diapering for each child.  What are the chances that "Murphy's Law" will kick in and the store in the little town will not have the belt we need in stock?  Also, Joe has been getting a couple of hours of overtime lately which would put him getting off work after the stores have begun closing.

Today I am hand washing the diapers and the little ones' bedding.  Surprisingly, I am finding that I rather enjoy doing it. I am using far less water than the electric machine would use and by not using the machine, I am also saving money on the electricity.  Washing laundry by hand is not a difficult process, just time consuming.  I can easily understand why our fore-mothers did laundry one day a week.  It probably took all day to wash the family's laundry.  When you consider how many children the families had in those days, I can imagine that laundry washing was an all day event.  It was a benefit that they had less clothing than we are accustommed to today, but given how hard they worked, I can only imagine how dirty the clothing was when laundry day arrived. Realistically, I don't imagine that I will suddenly become so enamored with hand washing the laundry that I will give up the washing machine.  It is good to know that I can do it by hand though if the need arises.

Here is how I am hand washing the laundry:

Start early in the day.  The early the better to give your clothing plenty of time to dry on the clothesline.  For the little ones' cloth diapers, I am finding that washing them every few changings is working great.  You will want to keep in mind with diapers that you want to stay ahead of the job as much as possible so that you don't run out of diapers while the laundered ones are still drying on the clothesline.

The first step is to have a couple of large, deep kettles or tubs for your wash and rinse water.  If you have a double sink that is deep enough, even better!  Use hot water if possible for both the wash and rinse. The only exception would  be if you are washing something that specifically calls for cold water.  If you are using deep kettles or tubs, have them at a comfortable working height.  It really makes a difference in saving your back from becoming sore.

I use a low-suds laundry soap (see my previous blog for the recipe) which helps a great deal when it is time to rinse the clothing.  The more suds your wash water has, the longer it takes to rinse all the soap out.  I let heavily soiled clothing such as my husbands work jeans "cook" on the stove in my water bath canner.  I put the jeans in the water with some laundry soap and let the water come to a slow boil for awhile. This will help to loosen the ground in dirt and things like grass stains.  While the jeans are on the stove, I wash the more lightly soiled clothing.  Wash the clothing in order of how soiled they are with the most heavily soiled clothing being washed last.  This will save you from having to keep changing out your wash water.

Taking one article of clothing at a time, rub them thoroughly between your hands.  If you happen to have access to a scrub board, all the better!  For the dirtiest areas, you can also use a scrub brush to scrub out the dirt.  I keep the laundry soap handy so that I can sprinkle abit onto a heavily soiled area if need be to scrub out the dirt.  Wringe out the wash water from the clothing before adding it to the rinse water to prevent getting the rinse water too soapy.  You can also add some white vinegar to the rinse water to help remove the soap residues from the clothing.  Wringe out the clothing as much as possible before hanging out on the clothesline.

There are benefits to doing laundry by hand.  One being that you can take the time to work on the heavily soiled areas and prevent stains.  Another benefit is that when hung on the clothesline, the sun helps to naturally bleach out stains.  The laundry comes off the line with the wonderful clean outdoors scent that no fabric softener can duplicate!  It is so fun to take the laundry outdoors and watch Abbie running around playing while I hang the laundry.  Sometimes she comes and helps hand me the clothespins or puts the dried clothing in the basket for me.  Micah enjoys being outdoors also.  I have him snuggled to me in a baby carrier.  He looks around, sometimes making his little cooing vocalizations, and just enjoys that time.

Whether I wash the laundry by hand or not, I am enjoying the clothesline and having that time outdoors with the little ones.  The washing machine being out of commission today is actually a blessing.  Had it not happened, I might have missed out on a wonderful opportunity with my kids.

Weekend Update

05:36, Sunday, August 5, 2007 .. Posted in Family Blessings .. 0 comments .. Link

This weekend has been pretty productive.  Friday, I drove to Oklahoma City to pick up Joe from the terminal early in the morning.  Unfortuntely, I only had about 3 hours of sleep the night before.  I got there okay.  I guess the excitement of bringing Joe home for the week over rode any tiredness.  We had to wait for awhile before leaving.  Joe had to go through the processes of signing off a student.  It was abit more complicated this time as the student failed his post-training driving test.  He was assigned another trainer for 2 more weeks of training to see  if he can improve.  By the time we left the terminal it was after 12noon.  By the time we got all our running round and shopping done at the health food store, it was late afternoon before we were heading home.

Saturday, I was pretty worn out still from being out in the heat so much on Friday.  I ended up taking a nap while Joe and Abbie used the riding mower to mow part of the field.  Joe likes to mow a path that we can take walks on and have access to berry patches and such.  Later in the late afternoon, we dropped Abbie off at his parents to go and visit with the couple we buy goat milk from.  We are wanting to buy a couple of goats from them in the early spring.  We ended up staying there for awhile longer than expected, then had to go and get some wasp traps to try and get rid of some of the red wasps.  By the time we picked up Abbie and drove home, it was after dark.

As we approached our driveway, we saw a very large animal in our headlights.  It looked our way and we saw the eye shine.  We suspect it was one of the large cats (cougars) in our area that has been attacking and killing neighbors' goats and turkeys.  It was coming from our property.  Joe and I were concerned because the ewe and goat were still out in the yard grazing.  We got home, half expecting to find one of them killed.  When we arrived, I heard both of them vocalizing.  Cloe, our dwarf nubian goat came up to the house and tried to come in the front door.  We got Abbie settled in bed for the night and then took the girls, with some feed, up to their stable.  Joe and I went together as now that we know the cougar is this close to our home, we don't deem it safe to go outside away from the house at night.  What a blessing that the Lord watched over our animals while we were gone.

After getting the girls settled in the stable & us getting back in the house, we found a couple of phone messages from a driver wanting to be Joe's co-driver.  Joe called him right away and made arrangements to bring him out to our home for a BBQ so that we all had the afternoon to talk and get to know one another.  This driver is fairly new to trucking.  He has had a co-driver before but had problems getting along together after some time.  He needs help with his backing to a dock and the paperwork (trip planning), but he is otherwise competent to drive without alot of help.  One of the things that I like is that he is 50 yrs old, old enough to not be too arrogant to ask for help if he needs it.  He knows his limitations and is wanting Joe's help in overcoming them.

Joe and I both feel good about him being Joe's co-driver.  So, when Joe goes back on the truck Friday, he will have someone to start driving with.  We are hoping that it works out well.  If this guy is being up front with us, it should work out.  He seems to have a great attitude and a wonderful sense of humor.  Both are things that Joe finds important since they will spend so much time together in the truck.

We found out that the guy is wanting to homestead, taking it a step further than us and living off-grid.  He is a "city boy" so was asking alot of questions.  He is genuinely interested in learning about the benefits and also to challenges of homesteading.

All in all, we feel the weekend was productive.  Having found Joe a co-driver so soon means that he won't have to be worrying about it the rest of his time home.  I am thrilled to have met the new co-driver.  I feel good about it.  I trust that he will be safe and not be one to take risks with his driving that could put Joe's (and his own) safety at risk.

In other news, the garden is still producing, though the squash production is starting to taper off.  I am going to finish up this week in getting the fall plants in the ground.  If we havea mild autumn, I should be able to grow quite a bit of vegetables.  I am planting  green beans, green peas, wax beans, pumpkin, cucumbers, beets, carrots, brussel sprouts, and more acorn squash.  I am also starting a small indoor herb garden in my kitchen window.  In the winter, I will start herb seeds indoors and plant them in the garden in the spring.

We are thinking of combining gardens with Joe's parents.  I talked to Mom about it.  Since we are expanding our garden to triple the space used this year, there will be more than enough space to grow for both us amd Joe's parents.  Also, will have produce to sell is all goes well.

We are So Blessed

Joe and I have been so blessed.  Finding each other and having Abigail, we felt as though the Lord has blessed us greatly.  Then, last night, we found out that the blessings are being added to.

I have been feeling sick for several days, unable to eat much.  No matter how much sleep I get, it never seems like enough.  Joe and I were talking on the phone and he asked me to go get a test.  I went to the store, got the test and did it when I got home.  Turns out that all the sickness and the "nesting" have been for a good reason.  We are expecting another baby!

I am so amazed by the tests.  In figuring the dates on a medical website, I am barely 2 weeks into the pregnancy, yet the test was able to show the positive results!  The baby will be due in late March.

It is abit over-whelming.  I am having a baby at 44yrs of age.  We are thrilled though.  We have placed the baby in the Lord's Hands.  We know that He is in full control.

The past weekend was a wonderful blessing for us.  We had the opportunity to attend a church youth camp.  Joe and I were dorm parents and also served in other capacities.  Joe worked in the kitchen during breakfast each morning and I served on the "God Squad" with the task of spending much of my time praying for the youth and leaders at the camp.    The weekend was so awesome.  The Lord's spirit was there and everyone seemed to enjoy their time at camp.

On the first night of camp, Abbie decided to crawl for the first time.  She had such an expression of joy and pride on her face when she finally crawled across the blanket I had her playing on.  The next day, Joe and I had her on the grass and he was able to watch her crawl.  What a joy to watch!

We met made many new friends at the camp.  We were so blessed through this.  We have email addresses of several people we met and are keeping in touch with them.  The spirit that everyone brought to camp was so rejuvenating and inspiring.  The testimonies shared were precious gifts that we were able to enjoy.

I feel so blessed to have spent the weekend with people so devoted to the Lord and to teaching the youth about the love of God.

Finally...Autumn is Arriving

01:50, Tuesday, September 12, 2006 .. Posted in Family Blessings .. 1 comments .. Link
Lately, the temperatures have been cooler.  What a blessing!  With the cool temperatures, my Fibromyalgia pain has greatly decreased.  I still have to watch how much I do each day, being careful to not over do it,  but I am feeling nearly back to my ol' self again.

I think that of all the seasons of the year, autumn has always been my favorite.  The changing of the colors of the leaves, the crispness in the air, what a wonderful season!  For us, it is a time of year that brings the smells of homemade soups and stews simmering on the stove or slow cooker, fresh bread being baked, and curling up with a cup of hot cocoa and a good movie.  During the autumn & winter, I do alot more baking than any other time of year.  Once the weather is cold enough that I have to keep the kitchen cookstove fire lit, I simmer the soups and water for tea on the stove constantly during the day.  The benefits are more than just a prepared meal.  The steam from the simmering pots helps put back moisture into the air that the wood stoves take out.

In the afternoons, after all my work is done for the day, I am now working on my crocheting.  I am still working to finish the prayer shawl I am making.  I already have plans to make some more of them as soon as this one is finished.  I also have nearly finished Abigail's crib afghan.

Today, I also made a pattern for Abigail's head covering.  I hope to get a few made up tonight.  The temperatures are cool during the day and she doesn't have enough thickness to her hair yet to keep her head warm.  I have pieces of flannel that I am going to make a few bonnets from for her to wear at night or when we are outside.  She is wearing little dresses alot, so the flannel panteloons that I am making will be a big help in keeping her warm also.  Lately, the Wal-Mart store has had alot fo flannel for sale for $1.00 per yard.  I am using that for her nightgowns.  The pattern I bought also has pajamas, so I am using the pajama bottoms for her panteloons to match the nightgown.

In the late evening, after Abigail has gone to bed, I have been enjoying my Bible studying.  I have been learning so much.  Most of what I am studying right now is on the topics of salvation and grace.  It brings so much peace into my life to finally understand them.

Joe and I both listen to sermons on tape that we get from church.  The pastor's sermons are recorded each week and the tapes are made available to borrow and listen to at home.  We have been borrowing the older sermons from before we started attending this congregation.  Joe listens to the tapes while driving the truck.  On weekends, we listen to the tapes together and discuss what we learn.

What a blessing to be married to a good Christian man who enjoys learning of the Lord and who feels the conviction to also teach his family what he has learned.  In this I have been truly blessed.

On the mend

In the middle of the night last night, my precious Abigail'a fever finally broke.  Praise God!  I was really worried.  I have seen kids go through the symptoms of reactions to the innoculations before, but never this severe.

Abigail is one of the few (about 1 on every 50 kids) who has the more severe reactions.  They are still considered "normal", but most kids don't have as many or as intense symptoms as what she gets.

This time around, her fever spiked at 101.2* and stayed there for nearly 36 hours before her temperature began to go down.  She also had alot of vomiting and diarrhea which worried me.  I know how to treat the fever (Infant Tylenol drops and alot of sponge baths) but I worried about her becoming dehydrated.  How do you help an infant stay hydrated when they can't hold anything down?

But, as I said, the fever broke.  She was finally able to hold down a bottle of formula tonight.  The first time in 2 days!  I even had to give her droppers of Pedialyte using a medicine dropper at times to get alittle into her to help prevent dehydration.  She also tried drinking from a cup.  We tried everything we could to get something to stay in her belly long enough to do her some good.  Thank the Lord that she is now able to hold down her formula and has no fever.  She is still very achy and cries easily.  When she is awake, she is wanting held constantly.  But I see definate improvement.

Today, my beloved's Grandparents and Aunt & Uncle came by in the morning for a visit.  What a nice time we had.  We don't get to see each other as often as we would like, so this was a good visit.  I was able to call Joe so he could talk with his Grandma while they were here.

Tonight, since Abigail is sleeping, I am hoping to get a few things done.  I want to be able to take it easier on Thursday & Friday than I normally do.  I always try to have everything done before my beloved gets home, which usually means that I over do it on those days.  This time though, I have the house nearly ready for his return earlier than I usually have it.  I am excited about this weekend.  Since Monday is a holiday (Labor Day here in the USA), Joe will have Monday off.  This will give us 3 days together.  What a blessing!!!

Blessed Rain

02:44, Monday, August 14, 2006 .. Posted in Family Blessings .. 1 comments .. Link
Today, we are finally getting a true break in the heatwave that has affected our area for so many weeks.  The temperature has been right about 93* and now we are getting a nice gentle soaking rain.  Praise be!   After so many weeks with temperatures reaching above 100*, this is truly a blessing.

My last planting of squash is showing signs of getting ready to bloom.  They have clusters of buds growing, preparing to open up into the blossoms.  If we should get more of the hot temperatures, I will have to cover the plants to provide enough shade to prevent them from producing small vegetables.  With all the heat we have had, the plants did not grow very large.  I am hoping that the fruit from them will grow to normal sizes.

Yesterday, I was at Roman Nose state park and was baptised in a pool of water that is natural spring fed.  The water was very cold at first, but I was enjoying it.  We even stayed in the water for a time after the baptism to  cool off.  Surprizingly, the cold water was very good for my Fibromyalgia.  It wasn't cold enough to cause me to be numb, but the cold water took away the pain I was having.  Once I warmed up, the pain returned, but the painfree time was quite a gift.

When we were enjoying the water after the baptism, I felt good enough to get playful with my beloved.  While giving him a hug, I tossed us both sideways and dunked us both under the water.  Though others were concerned for a moment that the playful act would cause me more pain, they were glad to see that I felt so good at that moment.  After I warmed up, I still had no adverse affect from that act.  :)   My beloved has such a wonderful sense of humor.  When he came up out of the water, he was laughing right along with me.

Today, I am taking advantage of the cooler temps and working in the parts of the house that are normally too hot to work in.  Our bedroom being one of them.  The room is not insulated and has no air conditioning, so I normally don't work in there during the hot time of day.  I am setting up an area to make into a sewing corner.  We have a large wooden table on our porch that is perfect sized for cutting fabric on and sewing.  This weekend, we will get it moved into the room.  In the meantime, I am getting the area ready for the table to be brought in.  Up until now, I have been sewing on the kitchen table.  It will be so nice to be able to have a more permanent spot set aside for my sewing.

I am making more plans for our homestead's fall & winter work.  It is our goal to be able to provide all of our family's food needs from our homestead within 2 years.  This means that over the fall and winter while temperatures are cool, we can get the chicken coop, turkey coop, pig pen and possibly a sheep pen built and made ready.  In the spring, I will start bringing in the animals.  We are still considering getting some goats to eat down the brush in our woods near the house.  It all depends on whether or not I will be able to care for them when my Fibromyalgia is flaring up.  The chickens and turkeys will provide our eggs and some meat.  The sheep and pigs will be a breeding pair and then we will have the young they produce to use for meat.  They are all small enough that I will be able to care for them, even during a flare-up.
On the weekends when Joe is home, he will be able to help me with the heavier stuff, such as carrying the heavy feed sacks or hay bales.  Also with any fence mending that I can't get finished during the week.

Another big fall project is getting the garden boxes built so that I can start getting the soil prepared for spring.  After having armadillos tear up my garden this past spring, I am wanting to plant in raised bed garden boxes.  They will be high enough that the armadillos can't climb in and dig up the seeds for the birds to carry off.  This will also make my gardening easier due to less weeding and also not having to get down on the ground to work.

Today, after I get the rooms cleaned, I am going to be doing more sewing.  It seems that I have sewing projects to work on each day.  Joe loves to keep me busy with that.  He knows that when I am having flare-ups, the sewing gives me something to do, yet won't cause me to over-work myself.  I have never met a man so proud of the fruits of my labor.  When Abbie wears a new little outfit I have made for her, he shows her off and tells people I made the outfit.  He also enjoys the things that I make for him.  That is such a blessing.  It would be so hard to enjoy sewing if he didn't support it or talked in a negative way about it.

I am so blessed and lucky to have such a man as my Beloved.  I thank the Lord each day for him and the blessing of being his wife.

Paula

Blessings

08:42, Wednesday, August 2, 2006 .. Posted in Family Blessings .. 1 comments .. Link
What a blessing this week has been.  There has been so many "little things" going on that are truly blessings in my life.

The first is the wonderful blessing on technology.  My beloved, as I have mentioned before, works in a career where he is gone from Monday - Friday, sometimes not getting home until Saturday.  This week, before going out in the semi, he activated a Pocketmail composer (pocketmail.com) which allows us to have email contact without his having to use a computer.  This has been wonderful!!!!  We don't have a cell phone so through the pocketmail, for the first time since he started this new job, we are able to be in daily contact.  Each day, we have been sending emails to each other, keeping in close contact.  Joe first got the pocketmail years ago.  You type up your emails, then call a toll free number and hold the device up to the phone. Through the phone, it is able to send and receive emails.

Tonight, I am sewing up head coverings.  I am making a snood pattern that I found free online.  I have also altered the size to make the snood longer in the back to mimic the scarves that I also enjoy wearing.  It is such an easy pattern that I am going to alter it again to make an infant sized snood for Abigail.  She is growing so much that I may make hers from a stretchy knit fabric so that it will fit her longer.

Another blessing that I have found this week is through a friendship that I am building with a lady I know from a scrapbooking group we are both on.  She lives about 2 hours away from me, but we are planning to get together as soon as we are able to.  She is also a good Christian woman and I am realizing through our emails just how much we have in common.

Abbie is doing great.  She giggles now.  She is also trying to roll over more often, sometimes managing to do it, other times getting frustrated.  Joe notices her growth and development alot now when he is home.  She is also alot more vocal, cooing and making other noises alot louder and for longer time periods than before.

We are so blessed to have such a healthy baby.  She is a "late in life" baby for me.  I had her just before my 43rd birthday.  We were given all the statistics about Downs Syndrome and other cellular problems that she could be born with.  We put of faith in God though and knew that however she came to us, it was God's will.  We've thought about having another one, but with my health issues, it wouldn't be a good idea.  We are at peace with that decision.  If it is meant that we have another baby, it will be in God's hands also.

Well, tonight I am taking advantage of the cooler temperatures and going to sew and relax.  It feels so good to have the house completely cleaned and not "have" to do any major cleaning for the rest of the week.  I actually was able to get all but one room organized.  The last room to be done will require Joe's assistance do to the items being things he needs to sort through (electronics and such).  I feel so relaxed now that I have things done.  That in itself is another blessing in my life.
