Hello
from the land of ice! The past weekend was an interesting
one. We had what the weather reports said was the worst winter
storm in our area since the winter storm in 2000. Joe was able to
come home Thursday night. The dispatcher had him run past the
house so that he could get enough wood into the house to get us through
the storm. The dispatcher knows we heat only with wood, so it was
a blessing that he thought about that. Joe ended up spending the
night and made a delivery in Oklahoma City on Friday morning.
Afterwards, the roads were getting really bad and so they had him come
straight home again. Another blessing, if they had him go pick up
the load that they had scheduled for him to bring home with him, he
would not have made it home al all over the weekend. We weathered the storm better than many did. Our power never went out. Our electricity comes from a different company than other families on our road. Their power was out for a few hours on the weekend. If our power should ever go out though, we have the oil lamps, wood stove for heat, and a wood cookstove to prepare meals on and also provide heat. As I said, we are better equipped than most for power outages. The house has been cool, but not too bad. Being an older home, it has alot of drafty areas. We have been making notes of the worst areas and have plans as to how to fix them so that next winter we will be warmer. In the meantime, Abbie is wearing a double layer of sleepers and I have my shawl on to help keep the chill at bay. Lots of warm drinks and hot soups and stews help also. Over the weekend we got alot accomplished. Being inside all the time, we took the opportunity to get things done. We were able to get more soups canned and also some vegetables. We are basically home canning the frozen veggies to make room in our small refrigerator freezer. We also rearranged the front room. Joe brought my sewing machine table & machine into the room so that I can sew in the same room where we have a wood stove burning. The pups survived the ice storm by staying in the house. What a riot! Ten puppies in the house. As soon as the storm was over, I took them back outside with their momma. She is keeping them plenty warm now. Today, I am going to start working on another batch of quilt blocks. I am taking part in a couple of quilt block exchanges. Luckily, I am going to be able to make the same type of block (9-patch) for both. I am really looking forward to being able to have more quilts around here. I pray that all those affected by the winter storms are doing well. Leave a Comment { Last Page } { Page 117 of 179 } { Next Page } |
