Homesteading: A Woman's Journey | |
Just another day in a homestead paradise! What a day today has turned out to be. Gotta love it!It all started last night when my Beloved, Joe, called to say that he would be home for the evening. The load he was delivering would be bringing him by the house and he could take his 10 hour down time here instead of at a truck stop. Thank God! While he was here, during the night, he stocked the wood stove that we are using to heat the front rooms of the house. As he tossed a log in, the stove shifted alittle. Not much......but enough. The next thing we knew, the stovepipe fell out of the place where it attaches to the chimney. Soot went all over the floor andwe had to open doors and reverse the fan at the window to get rid of the smoke while we re-attached the stovepipe. I can laugh about it now. Just another night in paradise! LOL Today, the weather is still cold, so I am uses both of the wood stoves. I went out this morning and found a box full of tree bark on the ground around the woodpile. Joe is hoping to be able to cut some of the firewood into small enough pieces for me to use in the kitchen cookstove. For now though, the bark is what I am burning. I used up the first box full and have gone out to collect a second box. I will go out again later and collect enough for the night. I have also been cleaning the soot off of everything. Luckily, there isn't much to clean since we took care of the worst of it last night. This weekend, Joe will be securing the stovepipe more securely. It is already secure, but he wants to make sure that there is no chance of that happening again when I am home alone with Abbie. We have been working on our family budget lately and have realised that we will be able to start doing the bulk of our grocery shopping once a month. This won't include all of the perishables since we don't yet have a freezer, but all the non-perishables, paper goods, cleaning supplies, and 2 weeks worth of perishables will be purchased at that time. I will write more about it in a separate blog. Suffice it to say, it will free up the weekends alot for us. Today is a bread baking day. Having the woodstoves burning, the house is warm enough that I am able to get a good batch of bread done. I hope to also get some other baked goods make for Joe to have when he is home for the weekend. It is also my pantry inventory day since Joe will be doing the shopping on the way home from work tomorrow. This evening, I hope to get some sewing done also. I have several projects that I need to get completed soon. I am enjoying though. I love staying busy. It helps make the days pass more quickly when Joe is gone. Abbie was so cute last night when Joe came home. Normally, I tell her when her Daddy in on his way home. Last night, I didn't say anything. When he came in, Abbie's mouth formed this cute little "O" and her eyes got really big. She never made a sound. She looked totally shocked to see her Daddy home. She kept looking at me, then back to her Daddy. Finally, after he had held her for a few moments, she began to smile and kick her legs, bouncing with excitement. Then she would get that shocked expression again and look from her Daddy, to me, then back to her Daddy again. This went on most of the first hour or so that he was home. It showed us last night just how much she is aware of her Daddy's coming and going. Daddy put her to bed last night. This morning when she awoke he was already gone. She kept saying, "Da-Da-" and looking for him. When she didn't see him, she called out louder, saying "Da-Da" then giggling. She finally realised that Daddy wasn't home again and after a few tears settled down and snuggled up to me. She is okay now. It will take alittle time for her to fully understand what is going on. Joe always spends as much time as possible with her when he is here. She just adores him. Joe made a cassette tape of himself reading little story books to her. I play those for her at night before bedtime. She enjoys them alot. She snuggles down and listens to her Daddy telling her the stories. Joe has a children's Bible story book with him in the truck so that he can read more stories and record them on tapes for her. What a blessing! Well, it is back to the woodstoves. They both need alittle tending to keep the fires going. Until next time..... Leave a Comment { Last Page } { Page 136 of 179 } { Next Page } |
