Homesteading: A Woman's Journey | |
Finally...Autumn is ArrivingLately, the temperatures have been cooler. What a blessing! With the cool temperatures, my Fibromyalgia pain has greatly decreased. I still have to watch how much I do each day, being careful to not over do it, but I am feeling nearly back to my ol' self again.I think that of all the seasons of the year, autumn has always been my favorite. The changing of the colors of the leaves, the crispness in the air, what a wonderful season! For us, it is a time of year that brings the smells of homemade soups and stews simmering on the stove or slow cooker, fresh bread being baked, and curling up with a cup of hot cocoa and a good movie. During the autumn & winter, I do alot more baking than any other time of year. Once the weather is cold enough that I have to keep the kitchen cookstove fire lit, I simmer the soups and water for tea on the stove constantly during the day. The benefits are more than just a prepared meal. The steam from the simmering pots helps put back moisture into the air that the wood stoves take out. In the afternoons, after all my work is done for the day, I am now working on my crocheting. I am still working to finish the prayer shawl I am making. I already have plans to make some more of them as soon as this one is finished. I also have nearly finished Abigail's crib afghan. Today, I also made a pattern for Abigail's head covering. I hope to get a few made up tonight. The temperatures are cool during the day and she doesn't have enough thickness to her hair yet to keep her head warm. I have pieces of flannel that I am going to make a few bonnets from for her to wear at night or when we are outside. She is wearing little dresses alot, so the flannel panteloons that I am making will be a big help in keeping her warm also. Lately, the Wal-Mart store has had alot fo flannel for sale for $1.00 per yard. I am using that for her nightgowns. The pattern I bought also has pajamas, so I am using the pajama bottoms for her panteloons to match the nightgown. In the late evening, after Abigail has gone to bed, I have been enjoying my Bible studying. I have been learning so much. Most of what I am studying right now is on the topics of salvation and grace. It brings so much peace into my life to finally understand them. Joe and I both listen to sermons on tape that we get from church. The pastor's sermons are recorded each week and the tapes are made available to borrow and listen to at home. We have been borrowing the older sermons from before we started attending this congregation. Joe listens to the tapes while driving the truck. On weekends, we listen to the tapes together and discuss what we learn. What a blessing to be married to a good Christian man who enjoys learning of the Lord and who feels the conviction to also teach his family what he has learned. In this I have been truly blessed.
