Homesteading: A Woman's Journey

Garden Journal

A garden journal is a good resource for those who are gardening on a regular basis.  I am keeping one to track the things I plant so that I can make more informed decisions the next season.

Garden Map section:
I begin by mapping out the garden area I am planting.  This can also be a sketch that is a work in progress over the winter.  Planning out how to best utilize your garden area.   It may take several sketches before you find the one that will work best for you.  You may also have more than one garden - herb, vegetable, flower, fruit.  By sketching them out on paper before planting, you can work out all the details before digging the first hole!  Saving you alot of work and effort later on.

Seeds/Plants section:
Next, I list all the seeds/plants that I am planning to put into the garden(s).  For each one, I list the variety, germation time, when it can be planted in the garden, type of sunlight, special soil considerations, etc.  I also record where I bought the seed/plants, quantity per package, price, condition I received the plants in, etc.
I have a page for each plant.  Besides the information already listed, I also keep track of when I started the seeds, when the plants were planted in the garden, any special treatment such as mulching, when the first harvest comes, how much did I get from the plants, what did I like about the plants, what problems did I have, etc.  This helps me a great deal.  If I find a variety of beans that grow very well in my area, I will have record of it and can get more of that variety the following year.  Likewise, if a variety does not do well in my area, I have notes saying so.

If you do alot of canning, freezing or dehydrating of your harvest you can also record how much you were able to preserve.  This can be very useful in planning out the next year's garden.  You can adjust the amount of plants/seeds you  put into your garden to receive the amount of harvest you are needing.

Hope this helps give you ideas.

I am keeping a journal also. I have my "note to self" section when I have a bright idea or when something doesn't work!! If anything, when I die and the kids find it, it will be a belly roll of a laugh!! I am very "me" in my journal!!
I love gardening!!
