Homesteading: A Woman's Journey

Our Weekend, Church & more

Sunday night, I drove my beloved, Joe, to his truck stop where he had parked his truck for the weekend.  He had to leave by midnight to reach his early morning appointment to deliver his load in Wichita, Kansas.

We had such a wonderful weekend together.  He arrived home early Friday evening.  We were able to have dinner as a family that night.  On Saturday, we ran errands and got supplies for this week.  We also had our weekly "date" and went out for dinner.  With my beloved gone so much, we always go on a date on the weekend.  Sometimes it is just going to McDonalds, but no matter what we do we make sure we have time just for us.  At this time, Abbie still goes everywhere with us.  We don't believe in having babysitters.  It is only in times of true necessity that we have his parents look after Abbie.

Sunday, we went to church. We attend the Worldwide Church of God in Oklahoma City, 85 miles from our home.  The members at the church have been very welcoming and very genuine in their friendships.  When we first started attending, we were welcomed with open arms......literally.  I have never been to a church before where you are greeted with a hug by other members.   Our pastor shocked me at first when I saw that just prior to starting his sermon, while we are still singing, he makes the journey around the room personally greeting and giving a hug to every person there.  I believe that the example of genuine love for the members that he, his associate pastor and their wives express really helps to set the tone for the membership.  The members are also very open and genuine with everyone.  The congregation is small by most churches standards, but we are a true family.  This is the first church that I have ever attended that gives you the feeling that you are going to visit and worship with your family.......not just a group of people that you don't feel any real connection to.  This week, Pastor Mike, spoke about the topic of what God's church looks like.  He gave many examples of how the early church met in member's' homes and other locations.  They didn't have fancy buildings.  The emphasis of the early church was the members learning, worshipping and praising the Lord together.
My beloved and I both feel so very blessed to have found this church.  We have seen through observing the members a true example of the Love of Christ being freely expressed through their actions and speech.  They have a true love of the Lord and desire to learn and praise Him.  Their living testimony is humbling and inspiring.  It feels so uplifting to go there and be a part of the fellowship.  We love the fact that we are taught with total emphasis on the Bible and  the teachings of Christ.  It feels wonderful to have specific scriptural references to back up everything the pastor teaches.  Never have I heard the comment to accept what he says on faith alone.  Nothing is taught that can't be backed up with a Bible reference.  What a relief to know that I can go back and prayfully study the references given and know that the words are true.  I have been a part of churches which don't back up their teachings with the Bible references.  It was hard to then study the topics further and gain your own testimony of what was taught.  The classes and sermons at our church give you all the information that you need to do further study at home.  I have learned so much through reading the references given.  It has truly been a blessing in my life.

Today, I am getting an early start on my week.  I have 3 outfits for Abbie to sew before next weekend.  I then will be working on the quilts that we will need this winter.  I have to make 12 of them to use in place of curtains in the windows to keep the heat in the house.  I am also starting to make more baby things to try and sell through Ebay and maybe the Oklahoma Farmers Co-op.

May the Lord bless you and your famlies with His grace and peace.

Your church sounds amazing. Glad you found one so loving. I enjoyed your thoughts on simplicity. We agree with your dislike of using credit cards. My husband has been a banker for three years and for the first two, he often came home shocked over the credit card debt people carried. Unfortunately, he's used to it now and accepts it as "normal" but fortunately not for us! Your sewing projects sound wonderful. I'll bet quilts for your windows are beautiful. In Montana, we would need them to keep the cold out in the winter!..............Denise

Window quilts

I remember the cold Montana winters! Actually, here in Oklahoma, we have very cold winters also. Being in an old home, it is hard to keep warm, so window quilts are going to be a blessing come winter. You can make them very easily. I measure the windows from the outer edges of the trim or about 3 inches wider on each side. I make the finished quilt to that measurement. You can hang them easily by putting a wide casing along the top back side of the quilt. I am going to be using a dowel rod type of hanger. You can do this also above the doorways of any entry that has alot of drafts, such as stairwells. It really does help alot in holding the heat where you want it. For summer months, you can do a quilt top backed with a light weight fabric without batting inside. If you should have a part of the house that gets very hot in the summer, get the liner fabric that has the silver colored material on one side. Hang that behind your quilt with the silver side towards the window. It will help keep the house cooler. I will be getting that for 3 rooms of the house before next summer.

Yes, we are very blessed to have our church family. It is very different than previous experiences I have had.
