Homesteading: A Woman's Journey | |
Another Weekend nearly gone....It is late on this Sunday night, but I am finding that sleep eludes me so I thought I would stop by and post another blog.It was such a wonderful surprise to have Joe get home earlier on Friday than he had been previously. What a great night we all had just spending time together. On Saturday, we had to run errands. We ended up not getting home until very late at night. Abigail slept alot in the car while we traveled, so was wide awake when we got home. We finally got her settled down to sleep around midnight. This morning, Sunday, we went to church. We travel 85 miles one way to attend the services. The congregation are so welcoming and friendly. We feel as though we have found another extension of family through them. We have been so blessed through knowing them and fellowshipping with them. This afternoon, was another quiet time for us to be together. Joe got his emails caught up and we had some family time together before he had to go to sleep in preparation for leaving. Tonight, he will be up about midnight to get ready to go back on the road. He has a delivery in Texas in the morning, so has leave by 2am. This weel will be harder than the previous ones. We were unable to add money to the phone card he uses to call home. That means that we will have no communication for the entire week while he is gone. We don't have cell phones, so the phone card was our only way to get in contact with each other. This week I am going to be keeping pretty busy though. Our little Abigail has outgrown alot of her clothing, so over the weekend, we bought fabric so I can make her a couple of new dresses. Joe picked out one of the fabrics.....a Strawberry Shortcake print. I am going to make her a simple prairie style dress with a coordinating apron, bloomers and a hat. I also found her some homespun style fabric also to make a similar outfit from. The remaining fabric I got was some pretty summer weight flannel that we got for $1.00 a yard that I am going to make her a patchwork quilt from. I hope to have at least one of the outfits completed before Joe returns home. I am having to make my own pattern using her other clothing as a guide. I am using a pair of little legging/pants as a guide to how long to make her bloomers, just making them alittle more loose in the legs. The dress is based on a little t-shirt that she has. I am adjusting the fit of the top to allow for a button closure in the back. The sleeves are being adjusted to be longer and more loose with alittle elastic at the wrist. For her sunbonnet, I simply measured her head and drew out a pattern. I can't wait to get started on sewing it up. I will prepare the fabric tomorrow morning while doing my other laundry. Then, in the afternoon, I will be ready to draw out and cut the pattern pieces from the fabric. I also am still working on the crocheted prayer shawl. This one is in an oatmeal colored fluffy yarn. I love the way it looks. Once I am done with it, I may end up making another one for myself. The shawl I have is a beautiful blue one that I was gifted with during my pregancy. I love it, just wanting another one that matching more of my clothing. I am sorting through my fabric stash. I need to make about 12 window sized quilted for using throughout the house this winter. Living in a home that is over 100 yrs. old, it is quite drafty and get very cold in the middle of the night and early mornings in the winter when the wood stove is burning low. The window quilts will help to keep the cold air out and the heat inside. I am using a simple 9-patch pattern on most of the quilts. Three of them will be large enough to be hung in the doorways from one section of the house to another, again to help keep the heat in the areas it is needed. I started sketching out my garden for next spring. Since I have limited mobility, I am planting in the raised boxed next year. This will cut down on the amount of weeding and maintenance I will have to do. I am planning out the size of the boxes, how many I will need, and how I will arrange them. I still have alot of seed left over from this year's garden. They are organically grown seeds that I bought from Heirloom Seeds Company. They are a wonderful business run by a homesteading family. Well, it is getting late and I am going to rest abit before I have to awaken Joe and get his breakfast ready. May God bless you and your families.
