Homesteading: A Woman's Journey

Milestones

I love watching the little ones reaching new milestones.  It is such a joy!  The first time they roll over, taking their first steps, these all bring excitement to both parent and child.  Some milestones tug at your heart.  Over the weekend, we had one of these.

Micah has been sleeping in a bassinet next to my side of our bed ever since he came home from the hospital.  At 4 months old, he has now out grown the bassinet.  He is able to scoot around in it to much.  We were given an old portable crib that is adjustable in how high the crib sets up from the floor.  We have it in it's lowest position, about the height of a play pen.  We have had this set up in the living room so that he is close by since our bedroom is in the opposite end of the house.  Over the weekend, we moved the crib into Abigail's room and Micah began sleeping in there at night.  It is so strange to not have him close by.  We have a monitor set up so that we will hear him if he wakes up during the night.

During the upcoming week, I am going to start having Abigail take her naps in the toddler bed instead of her crib.  She still uses the crib and so far has not tried to climb out, but we are wanting to transition her into using the toddler bed before she reaches the age of trying to climb over the crib rails.  Once she has fully transitioned into the toddler bed, using it at night also, we will start having Micah sleep in her crib and tuck the portable one away.  We are prearing their bedroom for her to be using the toddler bed at night.  One thing being to mount a baby gate at the doorway.  With the fact that we heat with wood stoves, I want the reassurance of having a baby gate to prevent her from getting up in the night and being around the stove unattended this winter.

It is so fun watching the little ones make these changes.  Heart tugging because you realise that they are making their first steps towards more independence when you would like to hold them closer for awhile longer.  I am so grateful to be able to watch them make these changes.
