Oakleaf Cottage

• Saturday, February 10, 2007 - Goodness

I've been absent of late due to a lot of things going on.

I have menu plans for March through May to finish up. I have some things I need to get done with the kitchen. Then I need to tackle the house more...

It's very...crazy here right now. And here I thought winter was a lazy season!

I'll be able to post tonight about a lot of things, but for now I'll just leave it as is. I need to check some marinating things and get some potatoes ready for dinner. Mmmmm.

Oh, and do any of you know if keeping bay leaves in flour goods and dry goods helps keep insects out? Or is that a myth? Thank you early for your replies!

• Sunday, February 11, 2007 - Bay Leaves

Posted by Anonymous
Hi,I enjoy your blog very much and it is good to see you back! Years ago my Mom was a member of a co-op and was told to put bay leaves in her flours to keep the bugs away. We have done this for years and have never had a problem with bugs. I buy bay leaves at a natural food store for a very good price and put several in each airtight container. I put in new leaves each time I fill the containers. I have even been known to scatter around bay leaves on my shelves where I store the flour. You have to be careful not to get any pieces of leaf when you measure out the flour as they are very sharp and could cut your mouth. I would make sure that the bugs are not coming home from the store in your flour (it can happen). I have also heard of people keeping their flour in the freezer, but I only have the freezer over the fridge so have not tried this. Hopefully this helps you,but it might be worth a try anyway.

God bless,Mary
