The Homestead Way of Life

Super simple chocolate syrup

07:35, 2006-May-1 .. 3 comments .. Link

One of the treats I allow my kids from time to time is chocolate milk.  It's actually the only way I can get milk down my 6-yr-old son.  But, every time I saw the price of the powdered stuff or the chocolate syrup at the market, I would just cringe and pass it by.

Well, after looking at some other recipes for chocolate syrup, I did some experimenting and came up with my own recipe.  If you didn't tell someone, they would think it was genuine Hershey's syrup.  You can use this for chocolate milk or on top of ice cream and it costs just pennies compared to store bought.  And so easy!

I know this isn't exactly "health" food.  But, at least it doesn't have all  the additives and preservatives the commercial brands include.

3/4 cup dutch cocoa powder

1 cup sugar

1 cup corn syrup

1 cup water

1 tsp. vanilla extract

Combine the cocoa, sugar, corn syrup and water in a heavy saucepan.  Heat to boiling, stirring constantly.  Once it boils, remove it from heat and allow it to cool.  After it is cool, add the vanilla.  Store in the fridge.  Will keep for weeks.

I never buy the grocery store stuff, it's full of yucky sounding things. I will make some for our house and my parents (they don't read labels:))!
Thank you and have a wonderful day!
