Anne Frank's Chestnut Tree

I just read a moving story on Foxnews.com about the chestnut tree in Amsterdam that meant so much to Anne Frank while she hid during the Holocaust in WWII. You can follow the link to read the story.

When I was in high school, our theater department did the play 'The Diary of Anne Frank.' My best friend Anne Chambless was in the play and because she was so into theater, I joined in helping. My role was very minor as 'backstage script.' I just supplied the lines if an actor needed them.

To this day I feel a connection to Anne Frank, because we shared a love and reverence for the God of creation. When I read the book...her diary, I was 16 - a time when I was discovering my own deeper relationship with God - I felt I had a beloved sister I had never met...except through her diary. I highly recommend the book "The Diary of Anne Frank" to homeschooling parents...have your children read and relate (write) their life experiences and faith in the comparison to this amazing young girl. When I got to the end of the book, I cried with the loss...at the ending of a beautiful book and the loss of a beautiful life.

I have to venture to town today with dd2 for an eye doctor's appointment. We will leave early so we can stop at the bookstore so I can pick up a copy of the book. It's time to reread and remember. It is through this kind of remembering that we can refute the Holocaust deniers and help prevent the past from being repeated.

I will also be taking a closer look at the large chestnut tree in our backyard. During this spring's yard renovations I think I will focus on the spot just below the tree as a great spot to put a bench or glider that I can use on early summer mornings to drink my coffee and read my Bible, just as the sun peeps over the hill. I believe as Anne Frank did: “The best remedy for those who are frightened, lonely or unhappy is to go outside, somewhere where they can be alone, alone with the sky, nature and God. For then, and only then, can you feel that everything is as it should be and that God wants people to be happy amid nature’s beauty and simplicity.”

With God's beautiful creation around me and His beautiful words in my hands, I can never be alone...
