Watch out for those antibiotics!

03:29, Saturday, January 20, 2007 .. 2 comments .. Link
On Thursday I took my dh to the doctor. His flu has become pneumonia. We caught it quickly and the doctor started him on a very strong antibiotic. Beware of this one: Avelox (brand name) or moxifloxacin hydrochloride.

There are the regular side effects you get with about any antibiotic, except in my dh's case the side effects were extreme nausea and a severe headache...even more than nine hours after he had taken the medicine. He has restless leg syndrome and it was exacerbated with tremors so much that he couldn't rest. But the worst side effect was the mental one...feelings of vulnerability and thoughts anywhere from never recovering from this and worrying about providing for his family to thinking he was dying.

The pamphlet that accompanied the perscription said this:
Tell your doctor immediately if any of these unlikely but serious side effects occur: uncontrolled movements (e.g., tremor), ..., mental/mood changes (including rare thoughts of suicide).

We called the doctor's office first thing Friday and they changed his perscription...PTL, no side effects from this one. He was able to go on his mail route today and I'm making him a nice chicken pot pie for supper.

Also, found a great remedy for nausea:
Ginger Root Tea
4 cups water
2 inch piece of fresh ginger root
optional: honey and lemon

Peel the ginger root and slice it into thin slices. Bring the water to boil in a saucepan. Once it is boiling, add the ginger. Cover it and reduce to a simmer for 15-20 minutes. Strain the tea. Add honey and lemon to taste.

I had already made a great cough aid with honey and lemon, so I added a bit to my dh's tea. It was tasty and eased his nausea fairly quickly. It is also recommended for pregnant women experiencing morning sickness.

Lemon Honey Cough Syrup
3 tablespoons lemon juice
1 cup honey (local honey is best)
1/4 cup warm water

Mix the lemon juice and honey well. Add the water and stir till blended. Use 1-2 teaspoons as needed. Store in the refrigerator. -- I like it because there are no drug interactions or side effects and it is very soothing, not to mention tasty. (This is great added to chamomile tea, too.)

Just wanted ot let you know I found your blogspot. You have accomplished a lot for being fairly new!! Also, my husband just got over a nasty case of pharyngitis- we have gone through tons of green tea. I had gotten him a wonderful hot water dispenser for Christmas (we drink a lot of tea), so he had 4 liters of boinling water at the touch of a button- really helpful during cold season!

Wanted to let you know that the books came today. Thank you so much. We're going to start using a couple of them immediately. You've blessed us.
Glad to hear that your husband is feeling better.
