Happy 4th of JulyTo all my American neighbours! Hope your day is spent with friends and family.Brightest Blessings Heather Thinking about the Fall GardenI know, Summer just started, and I'm talking about Fall already! But, in order to have a Fall garden, some things should be done now- planning, ordering seed, planting seeds to transplant into the garden when it is time, adding compost or any other needed soil builders, etc. In my area, July 1 was the suggested date for planting tomato, pepper, and eggplant seed. I'm a few days behind schedule, mainly because I'm trying to keep up with harvesting the tomatoes that are ripening like crazy right now! Most of the Fall planting for my area comes a little later, since July and August are always HOT Many of the same vegetables that grow in the Spring garden can be replanted for Fall, they like the cool weather and will do well if they have time to mature before a frost gets them. You can probably get a list of what grows well in your area in the Fall either online, from a local nursery, or from your County Extension Agent. Here's a little chart to show when the first predicted Fall frost date is: Zone 3 - Sept 1st - 30th If you aren't sure what zone you live in, here's a map that will show you. With that information you can see how long it takes a particular crop to mature and then count backwards to get an estimated planting date. Of course, it all depends on the weather, and it is good to give your plants at least a week or two of a head-start if your area often has early frosts. I live in Zone 8, and sometimes we don't even have a frost until close to Thanksgiving. Fall is a great time for growing here. Please share what you grow in your Fall garden and any tips you have. Those of you who live in colder climates, please share your wisdom, as this Texas gardener has never had to garden where it really gets cold
Hope you have a great holiday weekend, and maybe next week, spend some time planning (and perhaps planting) for the Fall garden!
Blessings, the luke is homeDS came home around 8 a.m. - having ridden all night with a couple from CO gong to IN. So good to see him again. The hair will have to go before he starts back to work Monday.![]() me and he
I need to add a picture of Ang, as she was at church camp since Monday - so good to have her home too and her cat thinks so too!! : ) learned a new skill in Africa - sounds pretty good on guitar. We got his room painted about 3 weeks ago - light blue - looks so good - vast improvement.![]() ![]() todayI've done fairly well keeping off the computer today until I get something done. I did my Bible study on Ezekiel 45 & 46 - animal sacrifices in the future? God has it all planned out with perfectness in everything. This week dear daughter and dear son will both come home tomorrow. Ang is at church camp and Lucky Luke will be finishing up his YWAM school in Col. Springs and getting a ride with a friend on his way to IL or IN. We're right on the way. He had a flight already to fly home, but then he would miss his graduation, so he decided to do the graduation thing. Today I'm cleaning the house - it will look better. I finished the rec room and bath down there - mostly have the living room cleaned up - just have to dust and vacuum; then tidy the kitchen and dust and vacuum the family room. I really enjoyed working at the thrift store Tues. and Wed. sitting and cleaning up housewares - enjoyed taking with the women there - it's like a little beehive - everyone has a job to do and they buzz around working - very organized. They do hire about 9 people, but whether I'm to work there in the future is yet to be seen. I'm sure I'd enjoy it and the $ too. But they said the board of directors want to change it to only volunteers work there; I don't see how that would work - quality would definitely be poor - would be like some of these other unorganized dirty places I've seen. Well, must read a few blogs of people then get on with cleaning. I even sent my niece a b-day card today! ![]() Just for fun, me & my husband about who knows how many years ago - at least maybe 15??? ![]() Filling The PantryCanning season is picking up and we are beginning to refill the pantry. We did some cherries last night to bring our total to 24 jars. We have bought some and my DH has gleaned some. He will try to pick some more today and I found someone online who is trying to get rid of some for a good price before the weekend. Yeah! I love good deals and when I don't have to spend a lot for produce to can. My total goal is 83 jars for the year, but I am also trying to add to our reserves so I would need 120 jars total. I had 21 jars left over from last year, so I had to can approximately 100 jars. This means I need about 125 pounds of cherries. I do these calculations for all of our produce and meat needs for our family of nine. I track them all on a spreadsheet. I can even tell you how many onions, heads of garlic, and pounds of potatoes I need to feed our family for a year. Some things I am able to get all of our needs met from the garden and some I have to do without or buy from the store. Our canned and frozen packages needs for fruits and vegetables is 1200 per year and I want to get to have two years worth on hand or 2400 packages/jars. My goal this year will be to get to 50% reserves where last year we were at 30% reserves. My problem now is where to put all the jars. I have a great canning room with built in shelves that was here when we moved in, but I am quickly out-growing it. This year we will be shuffling things around to move some other food storage to another room where we keep freezers so that we can free more room up for jars. Apparently I will need some strawberries also in order to meet our year's goals. We froze many of our own, but it is not quite enough. Today we will also look to U-pick some strawberries before they are all gone for the year.
Excellent Home Making ArticleWhen I read the following excerpt from Managing A Home by Crystal Miller in the Homestead Happenings newsletter this morning, I just had to e-mail her and ask permission to post it here on the Front Porch. Some of our new bloggers may not be familiar with Crystal's newletter or her Country Store, and I don't want anyone to miss out on the blessing of what she has to offer! The article spoke to my home-maker's heart and was both an encouragement and a reminder that I need to be diligent in caring for my home and family. Hope you enjoy the article as much as I did. Blessings,

Happy Canada DayAnd anniversary to me!20 years ago, I caught a train in Edmonton, Alberta to start a new life in Ontario.I ended up in Toronto on Canada day, after a very long train ride. All I had with me was my pet rabbit, 1 duffle bag and lots of hopes and dreams. The road has had many ups and downs but I have grown in more ways than I would have ever imagined! I still miss my home and still call myself an Albertan but I am proud that I followed my heart and hubby. Today, I couldn't imagine what life would be like without my hubby by my side and we are that much closer to going "home". Canada was built on people leaving the security of their homeland's to follow their dreams and make better lives for themselves, I am proud that I was able to follow in their footsteps and even manage to do it on the Celebration of their work! Happy Canada day to all and don't forget to follow your hearts! Brightest Blessings Heather new template - new dayI fiddle faddled with my template last night until too late, then I couldn't sleep - I'd better keep with my rule to turn off the computer by 9:00 p.m.! Today soon I'll be leaving to work at the thrift store. I didn't have time for my Bible study because I watered outside then came in and got on the computer - I need to keep with my rule not to turn on the computer until noon. It can certainly overpower everything else!![]() A high school classmate is trying to get all 23 (or less - some passed away) of our class of '69 to share their lives. One guy would like to have a 50th reunion - in 10 years that just may happen if we start now. Our class was rather lopsided with about 7 boys and 16 girls. Oh well, that's the way the ball bounces. better get going![]() Featured Blogger~Mama HenWelcome to this weeks Featured Blogger!
