This is a good video for those interested in sustainable agriculture.  It is particularly helpful for those of us who are renting or have limited space.

Anyone here with advice on this subject, please share it with us, too!  This is something our family and a few good friends are looking at putting into practice in the very near future.

Blessings,

Catherine

vertigo and electrolytes, help if you can

Hi.  do you ever feel like you are the top of a very high building (think Empire State) when the wind is blowing.  the world is gently swaying, but not enough to make you sick.  that is my constant state of being right now.  I am not sure the exact cause, but if you have any thoughts on my thoughts, I would love to hear them.  Oh, and this has been going on since at least Sunday, maybe earlier....
given: I am pregnant, and in that awful first trimester, the one where I wonder "WHY did I want this again.  NEVER AGAIN!  agh!  will three nine months EVER end?"  (note: I do this every time, but I am on number four, so I guess I forget.  or the thought of that lovable armful at the end overrides the memory.)
given: I have normally low blood pressure.  no, I am not sure of my normal, but I know it is low enough the nurses always comment on it.  I also cannot give blood - they start pumping, and I fill about half a bag, then it just stops.  seriously.  my midwife often has to poke me in two different spots to get all the prego blood tests (about 4 vials) full.  It runs in the family (my grandmother was prescribed potato chips by her doctor to bring up hers)
given: I get very anemic while pregnant.  I am taking 25 mg of iron biglycerate twice a day, and my main iron-deficient symptoms (exhausted-tired-like-I-cannot-move, shaking, etc.) are not in evidence.  this is the very type of iron I have taken in my two previous pregnancies and it has raised my iron levels to manageable levels.  I like it.  (I did have to try like 6 brands/ types before I found one that did NOT make me sick.)

other possible factors:
I am still nursing my 22-mo.  would that contribute?
it is kind of warm here, but I am not even breaking a sweat.
I am nauseated a lot of the time, but I have not actually thrown up (yet).  thanks, I think in large degree to the liberal use of nasty, pasty, chalky ginger tablets.  but they do work.  even if the chewing and tasting seem to aggravate the sensation for a bit.
my ears do not hurt - so and ear infection is not a culprite, is it?

if you have any suggestions, oh wise ones, I would like to hear it.  if you have any recipies for elctrolyte drinks, I would love those as well.  The gaterade, etc. is so full of HFCS (high fructose corn syrup) that I am afraid I will have a reaction to that since we have it so very rarely and in small doses.

meanwhile, I am here, atop my own personal skyscrapper.  I am trying to enjoy the view.  and the swaying while sitting still.

foods to eat and foods not to eat
this is from: www.pioneerthinking.com

I joined the community center for a month. Today I walked 3/4 mile with our dog, then mowed the back lawn, then went to community center for a deep water exercise class. I thought it was 1/2 hour but it was 1 hour. I feel much better than usual at this time of day. I may have RA in my thumbs - I read it shows up on both sides. Here are some old time remedies I found that I could try.

Old Folk-Home Remedies To Relieve Arthritis And Rheumatism

Arthritis, one of the oldest disease known to mankind, is the inflammation of one or more joints. It occurs in all races at all times. Decline in joint function generally begins at age 30. No one really knows the exact cause of this painful and disabling disease. However, there are two theories:

1. Infection
2. Body's own defenses go out of line and attack its own tissues

Also experts believe that emotional stress plays a very important role in the cause of arthritis.

Since so many people in this country (over 150,000 a year) are afflicted with this excruciating, deforming disease, many HOME REMEDIES have been tested and used with some degree of effectiveness. Listed below are OLD-HOME-FOLK REMEDIES that have been tried by various people for treating arthritis in general and rheumatism.

- Mrs. G. had arthritis for years until she found relief taking alfalfa tea twice a day.

- Mrs. O. got relief by taking therapeutic doses of vitamins.

- Mrs. B. found relief by taking a tablespoon of fruit pectin in a small glass of cranberry juice every morning.

- Another lady found relief by gently exercising the afflicted joints in tub full of hot water.

- After learning self-control and how to avoid emotional upsets, Mrs. L. found that her pain had greatly lessened.

- Mrs. J.G. was greatly relieved when she eliminated sugar, white flour, macaroni, pie, cake, and sweet drinks from her diet.

- Mrs. G. W. recommends dissolving 4 teaspoons of blackstrap molasses in one quart of cranberry juice and drinking one glass everyday.

- Another says rub the aching joints with hot vinegar before going to bed.

- Two teaspoons apple cider vinegar and 2 teaspoons of honey dissolved in a small glass of warm water taken once or twice a day brings relief.

How To Dry Fresh Herbs

Posted by HSB Front Porch

There are lots of ways to dry your fresh garden herbs. my sister dries hers in a dehydrator. But my favorite is to air dry them as follows.

Here's How:
Gently wash herbs and pat dry with paper towels.
Tie two to three stalks together.
Hang upside down in an airy, dry spot.
Herbs will dry in one to two weeks under favorable conditions.
When herbs are dry and crumbly, remove leaves from stems.
Crush leaves with a rolling pin or leave whole.
Pack in an airtight container or zip-top bag with air removed.
Use within 6 months.
Tips:
Pick best leaves just before herbs bloom.
Harvest in early morning as soon as dew has evaporated.
Herbs only hold their potency for about 6 months.

If it is damp out and humid inside I put them in my hot-water heater closet to dry. I am always on the lookout at garage sales for little glass jars with tight lids to store my herbs in.

anxious for fall

I cannot wait till fall.  I never can.  I love fall and winter - those are my favorites, except last winter when I was anxious for spring so I could plant my garden.  that is dead.  sigh.
I have given up on my garden.  between the grasshoppers, the dog, and the landscaper guy (who told me they would be starting"next week" and I needed to move my garden boxes so they could get in the big earth movers - THREE WEEKS AGO! - and he hasn't even started yet), my garden is dead.  I might get some potatoes - if the grasshoppers let me.  and the tomatoes hanging upside down will probably give a few (in fact, I have 8 or so tiny romas growing.)  but the melons, pumpkins, beets, peas, etc.  are hopeless cases.  sigh
guess I will just need to buy from the farmers market this year for my canning needs.

and this year, I have an extra reason for hastening the coming of fall: my morning sickness (which is more like afternoon sickness, really) will be over.  (notice the new addition to my blog?)

After a week of being away from the home and garden I needed to go to town and get some things that our garden couldn't provide. Right now the garden is giving up yellow squash, green beans, blackberries and lots and lots of greens. Today and Monday I will be canning and freezing. I was able to find Poesy County melons and peaches from Lakeview Orchards in Rockport, IN. I purchased Bunny Bread wich is made in near by Evansville, IN. I skipped our farmers market because I'm going to be leaving in a week and the garden is producing enough to give us some variety. If you live in the Ohio River Valley in Indiana or Kentucky you might find yourself around the growers/producers I mentioned and check them out. Happy Eating. Christine

Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. Philp. 4:6-7

stovetop zucchini and chicken casserole

I hate to heat up the kitchen with the oven, so this may be good for supper tonight. I bought some zucchini at a farmer's market and also a huge tomato (which was $2.25). Prices are high even at farmers markets - but it all tastes so good!

Zucchini & Chicken Stove-top Meal

6 zucchini - slice thick
3 chopped potatoes
4 sliced celery stalks
6 green onions
several chicken breast tenders, chopped
1/2 tsp. basil
1/4 tsp. oregano
1 tsp. soy sauce
1 c. tomato sauce

Saute onions and celery in 1/4 c. water for 5 minutes. Add rest of ingredients. Stir gently to mix. Cover and cook over medium-low until tender, about 35 minutes.

Until Monday...
