Wildfire near my house

10:05, 2006-May-29 .. Posted in Homestead Musings .. 2 comments .. Link

We headed out early this evening to look at screen doors for the back porch and noticed lots of thick, black smoke between the road we live on and the road to the west.  Dh circled us around the roads and came back home to call the fire department.  They told dh they had it contained at that point so dh decided we should go ahead and look at doors.  He called our neighbor across the road (who also had no clue there was a fire - no sirens have sounded all day) to ask him to call us on dh's cell phone immediately if the situation worsened so we could rush home.

Upon returning home, we were greeted by a scary orange glow shining up from the ground into the darkening sky.  Dh called the fire department again and the fire is still going, but is for the most part contained.  I'm still worried about the wind blowing embers around though since that's what's been happening with fires in our county to the north of us.  The fire department told dh we'd be notified by reverse 911 if we need to evacuate.  This is definitely too close for comfort.

Oh my friend, please stay safe. I hope you don't get any sparks on your property. Saying a prayer for you and your family.

Sounds scary!! There was a wild fire on the outskirts of a small town twenty minutes from my place last summer. Hope everything stays under control!
