A little bird told me

When I was outside the other day, I heard a familiar sound from my childhood... a quail calling "bobwhite", "bobwhite".  I was immediately transported back to my maternal grandparents' house.  I remember being outside with my grandfather and hearing a bobwhite.  I was quite young at the time and when my grandfather asked me if I knew what it was I told him no.  He proceeded to tell me "Why, that's Bob White."  Or at least that's what I thought he meant.   It didn't help matters for my young mind that my grandparents' last name was White so I thought it was a bird that was related to us.  How that makes me laugh now.

Thinking about that stirred up other memories involving my grandmother.  When my mom and I would go to my grandparents' house, my grandmother would sometimes say to me "A little bird told me you learned to spell your name" or "A little bird told me you got a dog" and so on.  My young mind thought that birds were really talking to her and telling her these things!  It never crossed my mind that it was my mom telling her.  

And then my mind drifted to my grandmother's glorious flower garden.  It was enormous and completely surrounded by rocks which I used to spend hours walking on going in circles around the beautiful flowers. My grandmother definitely had a green thumb when it came to flowers.

I'm so fortunate to have such memories to make me smile and give me a little laugh now and then, but at the same time it makes me a little sad when I realize my children won't have the same fortune since my mom passed before I even met my dh.

I have wonderful memories of my great grandmother and my grandmothers. I too wish my younger kids would have known them. I learnt so much from them, especially my great granny. She was a true homesteader.
