Last of the Dogmen

I treated myself to watching a movie this morning - Last of the Dogmen.  I've seen it several times before, but it's been a while.  Now I have a huge aching to know more about my own Native American ancestory (I know my great-great-great grandmother was full Cherokee).  My maternal grandmother spent years tracing her and my grandfather's lineage and had stacks and stacks of notebooks with all the information.  Years ago my grandmother was put in a nursing home and no one in the family let me know (my mother had already passed away at this point, otherwise she would have kept me informed).  I guess since I had a falling out with one aunt after my mother's death and since I live hundreds upon hundreds of miles away no one bothered to let me know or possibly it was someone's task and they did not act on it.  Anyway, it was months afterward before I found out.  I inquired as to what happened to my grandmother's belongings (oh how I would have loved to have had more of her quilts she made, some of the little trinkets from her display cabinet, and all her notebooks) and was told that my aunt with whom I had the falling out had packed everything up and gave it to Salvation Army.    I have tried in the last few years to make peace with this aunt, but apparently she wants no part in it.  I have sent pictures of my first ds, cards, etc. to no response.  I have a feeling deep down that she has my grandmother's notebooks, but she would never let me have them.  I would love to have them not only for myself, but for my kids (and what a wonderful addition they would make to our homeschooling).  I could attempt to do all the research again myself, but I wouldn't even know where to begin.

Hello!

I am so very sorry to hear about your grandmother's belongings - and the loss of the notebooks, and the trouble with your aunt. I have tried (unsuccessfully) to get information about my own great grandmother's heritage - from photos, she was obviously Native American - but because of her family's hiding in the mountains instead of being captured for the Trail of Tears, there is no record available - because they were not "Registered" as Cherokee. It seems that the registered Cherokee have a long-standing denial of those who would not go -- But one lady did write me back and say that as long as I know who I am, that should be enough. It didn't ease the ache of wanting to know for sure very much, but I do know I have had a very strong attachment to nature all my life - and have never seemed to fit in with the "regular" folks. If I learn anything about it all, I will come back and post it for you. Couldn't find your link to "View My Profile" or I would add you to my friends. :D I also have a brother who lives in the FL panhandle. Glad to find your post! Cheers! from ~Linda in Virginia

oops -- sorry,
