Finding My Way Home

Fresh Egg

{ 10:18, Wednesday, October 15, 2008 } { Posted in Animals } { 0 comments } { Link }
Because of the stress of moving the chickens, we didn't expect any eggs.  But there was one chicken, my favorite, whomever she is, that laid us an egg.

Albeit on the ground...
The bottom egg is the one from my chicken.  The top a farm fresh egg, too.  But not as fresh as a few hours!

Have you ever seen such an orange yolk?  YUM!

Strange Animal

We saw our first wildlife on our property.

You see it peaking?  My mom was out hanging up the wash, when this thing just wonders out of the trees, past her, and into the hostas.  She started baning on our window to get our attention.  It then wandered out of the hostas and into the back of the property where the overgrowth is.

It had a gimp leg.  Is it a really pathetic looking raccoon?  Or is it something else?  I can't tell.

Should We Get A Horse?

We have an opportunity to get a young (free) horse in a couple of months.  I'm trying to figure out how much it would cost us, but keep getting varying answers.  We will have 2.4 acres and a barn on our property.  But, eventually I wanted a cow or goat.  I would like to keep them on as much pasture as possible.  Does anyone have any advice?  I'm not sure if we should get one or not.  It's such a hard decision!

Chickens

I was reading  Barnyard in Your Backyard yesterday about raising chickens.  Boy, it sounds complicated.  I thought I would get me some chickens and eat me some eggs.... but nooooo.... so much info on types of chickens, what you are using them for, housing, nesting, perching, diseases, food, supplements.... It made my head spin.  But then I thought.  I bet if I read a book about getting a cat or dog if I knew nothing about them, it would sound overwhelming as well.  I guess I will just have to live and learn...
