The fires are much more under control today. Here is a satellite photo of our part of Texas. http://www.osei.noaa.gov/Events/Fires/US_Plains/2008/FSHStexas057_G12.jpg We are just a little ways east and south of the fires in this picture.
Today has turned out beautiful. The wind isn't to bad. It is sunny and warm. I decided to go get pictures of my calves. This is Nosey and her baby, that is yet unnamed.
Can you see the flecks of white or gray on the calf's side? They aren't big enough to be patches of white, but are there. She seems to be doing good. Her mama is a good first time mama. I was surprised at the gallon of milk I got this morning. My little kids are so funny. They can't wait to drink Nosey's milk. I am sure that will be for supper. I think it was still warm at lunch. She is learning to milk better. I still use the Kow-Kan't-Kick and the hobble. Yea, I am chicken! I don't like pain. I can see her doing good in a short time.
While I was out I got pictures of Sancho's calf. Sancho is Spanish for pet. She is a pet. Her mom died of old age when she was about 4 months old. I could get her to take a bottle, but she got babied and fed extra. She likes to be petted and will follow anywhere for a bucket of feed. She did good on her baby this year don't you think?
While I was having fun snapping pictures I took on of the bull. I can't remember if I have one or not on here. He is a Murry Grey. He is gentle and calm and very very beefy. He is also just as short legged as it looks in this picture.

Can you see how all the calves get their color?
I also discovered a sign of spring! I am sure it is a sign that will get frosted but it is still nice to see. This is an algerita bush. They look a lot like holly, even having tiny red berries, that are good to eat. Right now this one has tiny yellow blooms. The blooms have a strong sweet smell that will fill the evening air with their scent. The best way to describe it is a strong honeysuckle type smell, but different. Even though they are native to this area they get fooled way to often. The last year we had a bumper crop was the year we got the kids, so 3 years ago. They have fond memories of eating the berries. I have my doubts that they will make a crop again this year.
Hope everyone has had a wonderful day. Share a thought if you have time. I love reading the commits. |
