• Tuesday, February 26, 2008 - Fires, Calf Pictures and Rambling

Yesterday was a horrible horrible day for much of our area of W. Central TX.  We had major fires over a large area.  One town of a little over 1000 was even evuacted for a few hours.  The winds were gusting to over 50 mph.  The forest service said that fires were growing at a rate of 1000 acres every 30 minutes.  In case you think you can out run them, they also said they were covering the length of a football field every minute.  At one time I looked and our humidity was 8%.   With darkness the winds died down some, and the humidity came up. This saved the small town that had been evuacated.   The winds are not near as bad today, but the scanner says the the fires are starting up again.  So far in ranch land and not close to any towns.  There are a few homes in the area though.  They are calling for extra trucks to that area which is in the middle of no-where.

I did get one not to good picture of the new calf this morning.  She was in the shadow of the fence.  She is so tiny and cute.  Mama is doing good with milking.  She doesn't stand still and is trying to kick some.  I am thankful for a Kow Kan't Kick.  It really works.   She will settle down in a few days and I think be an easy milk.

I also wanted to share some of the signs of spring around here.

Peacocks dance!  They really do.  The find an unsuspecting female.  Spread their feathers and whirl around and show off, making a funny sound almost like rushing water with their feathers.  Here is one in mid whirl.

My peacocks have been know to be confused on who they need to impress. The chickens and guinnies are fair game.  Kids said they even saw one trying to impress a cat!

Today I have 3 gallons of yogurt making.  A friend is coming to get milk later today so I should be OK on room for one more day by making yogurt.    I may keep a friends little girl tomorrow.  She is a single mom trying to get her lift back together.  She has to work and needs a sitter for tomorrow. The baby is just a tad older than my grandson.   I know my girls will be thrilled, but I don't see a lot of school getting done.  Maybe it will be more along the lines of life school.

My other calves are growing quickly.  Here is a picture of Mocha, she is not nursing her mom, but Baby.

Her mama is the red and white cow.  She is an equal oppertunitue nurser. Her mama was empty, Baby wasn't.   While Mocha was busy on this side, Steak was working on the other side.

Baby doesn't care who nurses.  She is very layed back about it as you can see.

Ok off to accomplish something, even if it is just lunch!

Everyone have a blessed day and leave a commit if you are led.

I'm so glad to see your pictures! Thanks for sharing, Nola!
I know you can make soap with goat's milk, can you do the same with cow's milk. Have you ever tried?

About Me

Just want to share the joys and tears of living in the country with others that understand them both. I am mom to 5 children. Two biological and three adopted. We are praying for one more adopted soon. We live 40 miles from town on 117 acres. My days are full of homeschooling children and dealing with livestock. Life is never dull or boring or "normal" what ever normal is. I ramble on here often, some times more than once a day as this is my main form of socialization with adults during the day. Hope to make some new friends here.
