• Wednesday, February 13, 2008 - Fun Tuesday!

Yesterday I woke up early.  Guess all my resting has paid off as I feel better and am not having to drag my tired self out of bed every day.  I was up at 5.   I did Bible, played on here and by 7 was ready to start my day.   I also knew I needed to start early as I had lambs and goats to load for the auction.

We (21 yo son) had backed the trailer in the night before so all we had to do was run them in.  Well It was a little more complicated than that, but still considering my backing skills much better than me trying to get the trailer in place in the semi-dark.  With a little work we got the stuff leaving loaded.   On to milking cows, and getting ready to go to town.  21 yo took the stock to the sale for me.  After phone calls and other normal delays we were off to town.

Dropped milk off at a friends house, and picked up our co-op order. Then on to the auction.  We missed about an hour of the sale.  That was fine with me.  Our stuff had already sold.  I like it that way better.  It makes me sad selling even thought that is what I raised them for.   I was very pleased with what I got from these.  Most were less than quality.   Yet I got over $1. a pound for all of them.  Made for a nice check, which I promptly went to work spending.

First off MJ ask if he could get a couple of kids to raise.  I agreed, if I saw any good deals come through.  Not long after that 2 little red headed kids came in.  I picked them up at $1. a lb.  They cost $23 each.  It really was a little more than I wanted to pay but they are nice kids and at least one is big enough not to need a bottle.

We met some friends at the auction.  They had taken their mean billy goat.  It was their first visit.  I don't think it will be their last time.  I helped them get the hang of where to look for what was being sold.  They first sell the stock by the pound then weigh it to see how much you will pay.   It IS confusing.  Not even counting listening to the auctioneer for the first time.  I shared the trick of just listening to the numbers not all the sounds in between.  After a while they begin to get the hang of it a little.   I did laugh as after a couple of hours my friends husband bought a baby goat.  You could see he was pumped.  He is an EMT/Firefighter.  So I pointed out it was a rush just like the bells going off.  He agreed.

Through out the day I picked up 3 more kids all at better prices.   I bought 2 more at $11 each and one at $3.  My son who is a buyer also picked up a couple of saanen nannies for me.  They aren't as good as we had hoped, so I will give them a week. If they aren't working out I know how to take them back.  Might be a good excuse to spend another day at the auction.

It has been a while since I spent a whole day at the sale.  It was a small sale, a little less than 5,000 head.  Kids enjoyed it too.  I have one that loves it, one that finds it gets old, unless they are running stuff he might want, and one that is bored.  Nothing new there.  With my older 2 I had one that loved it and one that brought a book or took a nap.  Funny thing is both of them are still at the auction.  The one that loves it is now a livestock buyer, while the one that sleeps/reads is a truck driver and hauls livestock.  So some days he has to wait for the sale to be over.... he sleeps.

I came home really excited and pumped from such a good day.  My friend came by to get some colostrum for their new baby.  My dd went in to get some on to heat.  She came running back telling me Sam, (dog) had his foot hung in the fence.  Off I ran!   Sure enough 4 ft 4x4 he didn't quite jump it and had his foot caught in the top.  He had been there a while.  At least he could touch with his front feet.  I was worried about how he would react as I went to lift him up so my son could untangle his foot from the fence.  Bless his heart he didn't even whimper, just looked with pleading eyes for help.  I lifted him and MJ untangled the leg.  I sat him down and he didn't move.  I was afraid his hip was dislocated.  I gently pushed his leg more into place.  It felt fine.  He had a deep cut on it where it rubbed on the fence for who knows how long.  In a minute he was hobbling off to great our friends.  Later he had got in the Ranger and was quivering all over.  I loved on him and told him how sorry I was he was hurt.  He has expressive eyes and they just beg you to make it feel better.  As I was coming in I stopped to put the ranger up.  He was resting in the back.  I dr. his leg.  Hoping he would stay there, but when I left he hopped out and came with me.  I think he will be fine.  This is the same dog a couple of months ago that had to go visit the vet to be sewed up from ?????   I may change his name to Lucky...... NOT!  I haven't bothered him yet today to see how he is.

Plans for today????  I will check and make sure there isn't any old milk in the frig.  That it is all being used, not some getting lost in the back.  If there is I will make cheese.  I also need to make bread today or Friday.  We are out.  I did cheat and buy some yesterday at Wal-mart.  They had several kinds of bakery bread clearanced so .... we are trying it.  Kids have school to do and some chores.  It should be a great day.  Tomorrow it is back to town.  I sure hate having to since it is going to be in the 70s.  Friday they say the high will be 35!  How is that for a system shock?    I hope it warms back up quickly, as I am sooooooooooo ready for spring.

Hope everyone leaves a commit that took the time to read this long rambling thing.  :)  Everyone have a blessed day!

Hi! I enjoyed reading your post. I am a homestead hopeful...currently living in a townhome but learning as much as I can about the homestead life b/c we would like our next move in a year or two to be to a place with land. As it is, we grow as much as we can on the little available space we have!
We also have 3 adopted children...recently adopted (3 months ago!) from Colombia. They are siblings, ages 10, 8 and 3. I'm going to add you as a 'friend' because I would like to come back and keep up with your posts!
Thanks,
Holly

About Me

Just want to share the joys and tears of living in the country with others that understand them both. I am mom to 5 children. Two biological and three adopted. We are praying for one more adopted soon. We live 40 miles from town on 117 acres. My days are full of homeschooling children and dealing with livestock. Life is never dull or boring or "normal" what ever normal is. I ramble on here often, some times more than once a day as this is my main form of socialization with adults during the day. Hope to make some new friends here.
