My son figured the price one of the beeves. They will all figure with in a cent or two. Total price per pound
was $2.44. That is buying the beef and processing. I don't even
know which one he figured. That is $2.44 a lb for steak, hamburger,
roast, soup bone..... what ever you got.
All 4 beeves dressed out about 60%. My son's did the best at 63.?%.
Here is how it went
Live wt=Hanging wt.
970=574
1140=660
1000=614
1160=676
I do have one or two more that are going to be ready in a couple of months. The reach a point and then wow they grow. I think of this one as a sorry looking little calf. Every time I see him in the pen I am amazed at how big he is. I think I have one or two in the pasture that are doing the same thing. I know there is one. She escaped a month ago and I haven't had the energy to put her back. So 30 days of feed and she would be ready to go.
Since the only beef I buy are beef ribs or briskets when they are on sale I have no idea if this was a good deal or not. I don't even look at beef in the store :) I just wish I could figure out how to make beeves with enough ribs and briskets for my family.
Maybe this will help someone that is thinking of buying a beef. We charged $1.12 a lb live weight and took them to the slaughter house. From there each person was responsible for their meat. This time each one got 1/2 so they have to pay 1/2 the $25 kill charge and $.40 lb hanging weight. They get to tell how they want it cut up and wrapped.
For years we bought a day old calf and bottled it and fed it out. Took a year. Took us a year to eat a beef. Was it cheap? NO! It was a lay a way plan. We could afford a sack of feed or sack of milk. We couldn't afford to go buy a beef. Once we got out here we had cows! Then I added milk cows and made it easy to raise their babies and a few extra. Yes, we are spoiled. One other advantage to raising it was we knew the meat. We raised some that were sickly, we would sell them. I like knowing I am eating a healthy beef that was always healthy. Picky I know, but I also set at the sale barn and know what goes through :) I won't go there on here.
