At least I have a cow that has calved! She showed up this morning looking much thinner and with a dirty tail. I fed her good and hoped she would go back to feed her baby. I also looked as I made my very cold circle. We were at 30 and everything had a layer of ice. No such luck. I didn't find it even with the dogs running. She didn't go back to it either when she got full. So after breakfast off we all went to look again. Think of finding one 50 lb Easter egg in 80 acres of brush weeds and grass. Make that WET brush, weeds and grass. We walked and looked until we froze out. She stood and watched us. Dogs never even got close enough to bother her. It only took about 15 minutes of this for us to freeze out. We had a heat wave, it warmed to 36. Just warm enough to make the ice liquid on the grass. So our shoes and pants were soaked. I decided it was either alive or dead and either way I wasn't finding it this morning!
I am now setting here with a corn back under my feet. They are starting to feel again. I built the fire up quite well in the wood stove. It should be quite toasty in here soon.
I may try and dig to the bottom of the freezer and get some hamburger meat out and do chili for supper. That would fit the weather. I am out of beans to add to the chili. Guess that needs to go on my list next co-op order.
Everyone stay warm and post a note so I know I am not talking to myself.
Yesterday I made a nice round of Gouda. I hope it turns out well. It went faster and easier than the time before. Maybe it will get easier and I won't feel it is such a hassle making cheese. The other problem I see is I could quickly fill a frig with rounds of cheese aging. I could easily do 4-8 gallons worth a week. That would be 1-2 rounds.
They say we will get to about 50 today. It is noon now and 37 degrees. I am not sure we will see 50. Tomorrow the high is 33 with a chance of ice pellets. I wonder if ice pellets is the same as sleet which is what i grew up calling it? Then it is suppose to mix with snow. Good news is the high on Friday is 48, with more chances of moisture. :) Still way to cold for me, but at least above freezing. Then on Sat. we are back in the 60s!!! I really like 70s much better. |

I sure hope you find that calf. Cows can hide those calves real well. We've had calves that weren't found for over a week!
Stay warm.
