• Monday, January 21, 2008 - It's Monday!

And supposed to be warmer than it has been!  YEA!!!!!!!!  Sat. morning as the sun lightened the sky through clouds I kept thinking what a heavy frost we had.  It was 13 degrees.  When it finally got real daylight I realized that wasn't frost it was ICE.   We had ice fog in the night.   Roads were fine, but trees and fences were covered in ice.  It was beautiful.  This is my garden covered in ice.

The ice hung around until noon or so.  It slowly faded away.  It was neat to look across the pasture and see the trees on the hill.  The top 3/4 was white while the bottom was normal.

Sat. we loaded the beeves to take to town to my son's pens.  He has scales there so he weighted them.  I was figuring 900 lbs each.  They were right at 1000 each.  The one that was the jersey milk cow's calf was just under 1000 while all the others were just over.   I can't wait :)  STEAK again!   Down side is I now have 3 weeks to get my freezers as empty and clean as possible.

My husband is helping empty the freezer.  NOT!  I called him Friday and told him I was beef rib hungry.  Should I drive to town and get some.  Usually I can get them cheaper by the case at one little grocery store.  He suggested calling the grocery store near where he works.  God is good!  They were on sale.   He ran by on his way home and got a few packages.  He always fusses when I buy a case because he ends up cooking most of the day.  Good thing this store didn't sell in cases then.  He just bought 11 packages, and cooked ALL day!   They are sooooooo good!!!  We froze a bunch consumed even more.   We will eat beef ribs most of the week.  I start with bought BBQ sauce then add garlic and ginger and onion and molasses to it and vita mix it good.  Some times if I have peppers I toss a few of those in.  It turns out great.  As my son says it has more kick than the bought stuff.

As of last night still no baby calf.  I was afraid when I saw the ice that she would have calved.  That would be perfect weather for it.  She is so fat and her udder was filling up last night.  I think I had yesterday marked as the day, but that is subject to change.   Maybe today or last night was the right time.  I don't need the milk, but I love having new babies.

I cheated and tried my Gouda cheese a few days early.  It was great!  I will make some more of it.  Maybe today.   I will make a bigger chunk.  I used about 2 gallons before that doesn't make much.  Think about a coffee cup full.   It was really good.  I was trimming the rine off yet the kids kept coming back and eating that too.     I guess I did OK with it.  Wonder if I can do OK twice?

Back from chores!  No calf, just a fat cow.   Maybe today.  Can you tell I don't wait well?

I need to get the laundry on.  I thought it was supposed to warm up today and be partly sunny.  So far it is heavy clouds and very humid.  I hope this humid leads to rain.  We have a 30% chance later in the week.  I just keep praying that it rains.  I think it is to late for our oats, but maybe some of the farmers oats or wheat will make if we get rain soon.

Off to be mom and maid!  All be blessed!

About Me

Just want to share the joys and tears of living in the country with others that understand them both. I am mom to 5 children. Two biological and three adopted. We are praying for one more adopted soon. We live 40 miles from town on 117 acres. My days are full of homeschooling children and dealing with livestock. Life is never dull or boring or "normal" what ever normal is. I ramble on here often, some times more than once a day as this is my main form of socialization with adults during the day. Hope to make some new friends here.
