• Wednesday, December 12, 2007 - Wet Muddy Sloggy COLD!

We have had almost an inch of rain over night! Yea! I keep watching the radar and the frozen stuff is getting really really close to us. I can really do without the frozen stuff.  I am glad for the rain, but wish it was about 20, oh OK 40 degrees warmer!  It is about 37 right now.

One of the reason I don't like the cold wet is it is so hard on the stock.  This morning I was watching a kid out in the goat pen.  No mamas around just one very humpy kid.  I gathered him up and took him to the barn.  The stress of being handled on top of being so chilled killed him.  :(  He was alive when I got him to the barn, but couldn't stand up.  He was standing when I picked him up.  By the time chores were done he had died.   This is an example of why I fuss so about cold.

Last night my milk cow finally brought her baby back to the barn.  I promptly stuck her in the barn.  :)  With the rain I was glad she was in the barn.  This morning after I did her mama who gave about 3-4 gallons I filled a bottle with milk and bottled her.  It was just a coke bottle, but I want her to be use to us and come to us for attention.   So far she hasn't kicked or tried.  Some babies will kick every time you get in range.   I am hoping she has the calm spirit of her dad not her mom.

I made a crock pot full of potato soup for last night.   Well I started it in the crock pot but someone forgot to plug it in.  So when it was almost supper time potatoes weren't done.  I switched it to a stove pot and finished it.    I hope I have enough potato soup for today. Kids sorta made pigs of themselves last night with it. I didn't even eat any. I had a cinnamon roll about 5.

After chores I wanted to work on my opera wrap/cape thingy that I am making with a knitting loom. I worked on it until 10:30! You know how you want to get to a certain spot? I wanted to finish that skein of yarn. I finally gave up! I have a tiny handful of yarn still on the skein. Today I will start the new color!  I am using two threads.  One is a variegated brown/red/cream/blue the other is a dark blue.  When the variegated skein is used up I am switching the blue to a cream.  I will continue with the variegated only with cream for a skein.  Then I will finish off with more of the blue/variegated.  I can't wait!   I see me doing a LOT of knitting today.  It is the perfect day.  Weather is to dreary and cold so setting by the fire and knitting sounds wonderful.

I remember what time in the winter we were in care of our neighbors sheep as they went to go watch the berlin wall come down( yes many years ago.lol), sadly it was lambing season and there were so many lambs being born and we happend to get a cold chill and I remember being quite upset because I found one of the lambs not being tended too by its momma or anyone else for that matter, I took him home and tried to bottle feed, but it was too late he too died of being too cold and alone. ahh the life of a farm gal eh?!

About Me

Just want to share the joys and tears of living in the country with others that understand them both. I am mom to 5 children. Two biological and three adopted. We are praying for one more adopted soon. We live 40 miles from town on 117 acres. My days are full of homeschooling children and dealing with livestock. Life is never dull or boring or "normal" what ever normal is. I ramble on here often, some times more than once a day as this is my main form of socialization with adults during the day. Hope to make some new friends here.
