• Tuesday, December 11, 2007 - Looms, Milk Cow personalities and just rambling

I was thinking this morning as I did the cows how different not just in looks and temperament but in personalities they are.  Daisy is not outgoing.  She would be the peace maker. She seldom gets into stuff or causes trouble.  She just comes in to be milked like a good girl.  I usually milk her first.  Then there is Vallie, who was the one that caused these thoughts.  I use a stick to push open the gate for each cow so I don't get flattened as they come in for feed.   Vallie is standing just out of gate range.  She won't let Daisy come in, yet won't come in either.  Each time Daisy tries Vallie hits her with her head.  I finally threaten her with my stick and she backed up so Daisy could come in.

After Daisy was done I put more feed out.  Vallie is still standing right outside the gate.  It "looks" like she is waiting for the gate to open to rush in.  I open the gate.  She looks at it, at me and doesn't move.  I stand there holding the gate open thinking nice thoughts about milk cows.   She is at least blocking the other cows so they can't come in.  Finally I give up and go to get her.  We then play catch me if you can.  She keeps about 2 inches out of my grasp.  I lung and grab her halter.  OK game over so she is bull dozing into the barn now.   Some of the cows I will slid in behind after the are eating, not her.  So I go in ahead of her trying to not get ran over.  She has been really good with the cow can't kick and hobbles.  She hasn't tried to kick in 2 days.   I milk her while she eats then she goes out just like a nice cow.   I am assuming that her baby is doing fine.  I let it out the next morning and she took it back to the pasture.  She hasn't brought it back.  I did hear it moo last night in the fog but didn't bother going to find it.  She will start bringing it in soon.

As I have said before Baby is in a class all to her self.  She isn't ugly like Vallie to deal with she is just a pain in that gates are meant to be opened, and standing in the way is where she thinks she belongs.  She just could care less if you want her to move.

I'm not sure what Nosey's personality will be as she matures.  She isn't called Nosey for no reason.  As a calf she would have her nose in the barn, or any open gate or where you didn't want her.   I have a feeling that will transfer over to her adult years.

Does anyone else here loom knit?  I have gotten hooked!  I am working on an opera wrap right now.  I can't wait to finish.  I keep working on it today instead of playing on here or getting stuff accomplished.  :)   I am doing it in shades of brown and blue.  I bought the set of hat looms a couple of weeks ago.  The kids have had fun with them.  I made me a hat then wanted a more challenging project.  I found these really cool looms at Hobby Lobby.  They are made to do things up to 10 ft long.  Oh boy!  My wrap is supposed to be 5 ft.  I don't think it will be quite that long as I tend to pull my stitches tighter than I should.  I have almost a foot done.  Two more feet to do and I will be finished.  I don't really have a goal on when I will finish.   Just when it happens.  I did come up with an idea this morning as I was wasting time.  I will pray for different people as put the loops on and then someone else as I take the loops off.  This at least makes me feel I am accomplishing something worthwhile.

I made the best cinnamon rolls yesterday.

http://pioneerwoman.typepad.com/confessions_of_a_pioneer_/2006/12/cinnamon_rolls_.html

These cinnamon rolls are soooooooo good, even using whole wheat flour and rapadura instead of white sugar. Easy too!   I used my vita mix to make powdered sugar, or powdered rapadura.

I really need to stop baking.  I eat to much of it!  I do want to try this basic recipe and see if I can make a better bread.

All have a wonderful afternoon.

My FIL and MIL have three Jersey's and boy are they all different! Daisy is so funny she is always the one that comes flying in the barn when you feed! She wants to eat her feed and everyone elses too. Belle is real easy going and go with the flow kinda gal. I haven't met the new cow yet but I am sure she will be fun too! I just started loom knitting too! Shhh...there are some Christmas presents being made! =-) I too love the pioneer woman site although I have only made one thing I still enjoy it! Enjoy your day! Stop by my blog sometime. Blessings, Jennifer

It is so easy to get hooked on the loom! I love doing it when the weather is too bad to go outside. It makes quick work of a hat project. Makes great gifts too. Thanks for the post.

I think it is so neat how an animal can have a different personality. My goats are all different in personalities.
I enjoyed you post very much. I like to read about other people's homesteads and their animal.
God Bless,
Belle

I love hearing about your cows' personalities. Before I got a cow I always thought they were so dull and boring. How wrong I was. They are a constant source of entertainment for me (and frustration sometimes). Chloe is the bully and likes to push Pumpkin away from the feeder so she can have the hay. Unfortunately for Chloe it has two openings, so Pumpkin just goes around to the other side. I have to chase Chloe out of the barn every morning so I can give grain to Pumpkin while I milk her. She does not appreciate being treated as second rate. Sometimes she gets in a mood and makes me chase her around the barn a few times before she finally goes out. She's a grain fanatic while Pumpkin could eat half of it and decide she doesn't want any more. Funny funny animals. I'd be scared having a Holstein barreling towards me too.

About Me

Just want to share the joys and tears of living in the country with others that understand them both. I am mom to 5 children. Two biological and three adopted. We are praying for one more adopted soon. We live 40 miles from town on 117 acres. My days are full of homeschooling children and dealing with livestock. Life is never dull or boring or "normal" what ever normal is. I ramble on here often, some times more than once a day as this is my main form of socialization with adults during the day. Hope to make some new friends here.
