I miss sharing the day to day happenings with others. I also would like to be able to go back a year from now and know when I did something or something happened. So I decided to start a blog. I have no idea what I am doing. I played with the aviator because I didn't like the sheep picture. I like sheep, just not that picture. The picture I have up is to small but for now it will work.
Today is a normal day for me. I started off checking my son's goat pen. I am playing midwife to about 150 goats. That number will go up as he buys more. He has a few more to bring me tomorrow, 40 or so he said. Yesterday I had three sets of twins born. One looked really good, one had a baby that didn't want to stand up and mama looks to have very little milk, the last one I have been watching mama since she has one side of her udder that almost drags the ground. Not a good position for a baby. I took colostrum out for the one that couldn't stand and the smaller one of the other nanny last night. I decided to play it safe and save steps by taking a bottle this morning too. Baby still isn't standing well, he was hungry. One of the others was pretty humped up and read to eat. While I am feeding the first baby I discover a new set of twins. Mama is standing over them, not cleaning. It is 37 degrees. They aren't moving much. I continue to watch her while I feed babies, check everything else and give shots to the two that were still wet last night. I like to wait until they are at least dry before I stick them. She never made any effort to clean them. I sent kids over to pick them up. I almost waited to late. They are pretty chilled.
I sent the 2 legged kids to the house with the 4 legged kids. They were to towel them off and get colostrum on to thaw. I noticed only one used a good kitchen towel to dry them. Not to bad. I headed to the barn to milk.
Once MN my 10 yo got her brother and sister lined out on drying babies and colostrum on to thaw she came to the barn to bottle the two lambs and one goat there. I do cheat and have a milking machine. While Daisy was plugged in I played with Nosey, my up and coming milk cow. She will calve in the spring. She hasn't kicked at me in 2 weeks :) That is an accomplishment.
Once milking was done and milker washed up I joined them in rubbing kids and getting just a tiny bit of warm colostrum down them. Now 4 hours later in a nice warm pantry they are trying to stand up. I have offered them colostrum several times. Each time they take a little more. This time they both nursed.
Guess it is time to make another circle and see how the goats/babies in my son's pen are doing.
I had hoped to go to town for a park day but my 2 4th graders seem to be procrastinating on school. Such is life. Guess they will be sad when I tell them what the missed.
