Assessment Time

There's nothing like having out-of-town family visit for a week to have a chance to see our own family life from a new perspective and "assess" how things are going.  During this past week, I've learned something interesting about our family..... we are all talkers.  All FIVE of us.  How did THAT happen?  Isn't there usually a quiet spouse and a talkative one?  And isn't one child usually quiet, especially if there are one or more siblings who talk nonstop?  But no, not for us.  So imagine, three children, two parents and a grandma who all like to talk... and be heard... all at the same time.  Grandpa is the quiet one in this family, but imagine how hard it must have been to follow 6 conversations at once!  Humorous in a way, but very shocking in another.  We all love to be heard and listened to, but none of us are very good at listening.  And the children especially interrupt and don't want to wait their turn.

So that's been an eye-opening thing for me.  It was one thing when we had two girls who are energetic and excited and want to talk.  Not too hard to sort out or stop one and remind them to wait their turn if it got too chaotic.  But now with a little boy who wants to talk too, something has to change!

As one of our "goals", I am planning on working with the children (AND with myself) on the way we talk.  The content of our speech... kind? necessary? true?   And also the quality of our speech... acceptable volume (NO SHOUTING!, go find the person you want to talk to, don't yell through the house), polite (no interrupting, wait your turn to talk, listen quietly), and thoughtful (think first, then speak).

I'm learning that I can't teach something to my children very well that I haven't learned myself.  Too often I find myself yelling, "STOP SHOUTING!"  Hmmmm....

Our extended family is like that. Who knows how our son will grow up because hubby and I love to talk as well. He is only 20 months, so we have a ways to go with him though. LOL

Some great goals you are setting there with the little ones!!! I hope you achieve them all.

God's Blessings,
Amy Jo
