At Home in Georgia

Thinking... about Michigan and ice and snow

I miss my family and friends from Michigan, but on days like this, I have to say I'm glad I'm not in Michigan today.  Growing up in Michigan and living with 6-8 months of winter, days like today are not just a break from 40 and 50 degree Georgia "winter" days.  They are small miracles to me.  It was 75 degrees and sunny today.  The kids rode bikes and played on the swingset.  I opened the windows and marveled at the wonderful day.  Now, I do miss snow at Christmas and....

~ curling up under a heavy blanket and reading a good book;
~ the way snow makes everything look fresh and clean;
~ the way ice turns the outside into a fairy world of glass;
~ waking up in the cold mornings with my nose out in the cold air and
   the rest of me in a warm cocoon of blankets;
~ skiing;
~ the way Christmas lights look under a blanket of snow;
~ the smell of snow in the air;
~ anicipating a big snowstorm;
~ watching kids play in the snow;
~ SNOW DAYS!

But... I do NOT miss...
~ scraping the snow and ice off my car;
~ waiting for the car to warm up while I shiver;
~ cold legs and feet in nylons and dress shoes on Sunday mornings;
~ trying to keep my balance on icy sidewalks;
~ melted snow and ice all over the floors
~ shopping in heavy winter coats... too warm inside, too cold outside;
~ worrying about losing power in that much-anticipated snowstorm!

So today, I'm thankful for 75 degree days in December!

I enjoyed your post.... does michigan really have that long of a winter??? OH MY!! That is long!! I love, love seasons -- but here in NW Missouri we have the typical 3 mos of winter, 3 mos of spring, 3 mos of summer and 3 mos of fall...... all very distinct....... I couldn't imagine 6 mos of winter! Wow!

Blessings~

It can be very long... sometimes the first snow is in October (this year, the first snow was in early November) and the last snow can be as late as May. I guess that's only 7 months, but still...! It feels like forever. Brrrrr...

Someday we would like to move south to get away from long winters, too! I enjoy it for Christmas and then I'm ready for summer again! I have written about this subject on my blog. So....should we have Georgia on our list of places to check out for moving south someday?

Cold WNY

It is cold here from about the beginning of November until April. Sometimes we get a warm day thrown in like a 65 degree day in February, but that is quite the exception.
I have found that a remote car starter is a great solution for starting that car in the cold, and Cuddle-duds are perfect under a dress.
Blessings,
Jennie

Michelle, I'm also from the North, Quebec Canada specifically. Being in warm Tennessee I miss the snowy winters, but I don't miss the bitter cold and the whole list you mentioned. I'm becoming a Southerner more and more, and I don't think that I could move back North.
