Three Weeks Already Done???

I can't believe we've been homeschooling for three weeks already.  So far, it's been going so well.

My oldest is doing better than expected concentrating on her work while there's a lot more going on than last year.  She's reading like crazy and really enjoys school.  I have to conscously remember to move her around -- up to the chalkboard for some things, back to the table for a while, into the other room to read, outside for story time, up to the kitchen table to math, etc.  I think that's part of why things have been going so well for both girls.

My almost 4 year old is doing very well too.  She's so excited to be doing school like her big sister.  And keeping her busy has limited her never-ending desire to get into trouble!  She probably gets more attention from Mommy now, too, so I guess that would help.  She's learning to count objects up to 5, counting up to 20, letter sounds, following directions, and coloring a little more carefully.  I'm always amazed at what they can accomplish with a little concentrated but friendly direction.

The only one who doesn't like homeschooling is my 20 month old.  He's decided that he doesn't like his sisters to be so busy, because they can't keep HIM busy.  He wants picked up, put down, up, down, up, down.  Tears, tears, tantrum.... he's not happy with us in the same room or in the room next to us.  So... he's been spending about an hour a day (while I do the most concentrated individual teaching) in his pack and play upstairs listening to a Wiggles CD and playing with his toys.  And... unbelievably... he's much happier there.  Who knew?  He still gets to be with us for big sister's reading time, out on the porch for story time, etc.   But that time alone may actually be something he needs in our busy, noisy house.

So I'm content.  Tired, but content.  I'm so happy to have my kids "back" to myself now that school has started.  Our van has been out of commission, so the temptation to just go SOMEWHERE, anywhere! during the day isn't there.  If we know we need a vehicle, we just take my husband into work, since he's only about 5 miles from home, but that involves getting the kids up early, so we don't do that unless we really need to go somewhere.  Yesterday, a friend from church gave us their van to borrow until ours can be fixed.  Just in time for doctors appointments tomorrow and a homeschool ice cream social.  God provides in such unexpected ways.

We're all looking forward to a long holiday weekend.  Hope you all have a wonderful Labor Day!

You sound much more productive than I have been!! LOL!

Thank you for your wonderful comment about milk and our foods in general - great dialogue and food for thought and I really appreciate you taking the time to share your thoughts.

It wasn't all that long ago my sons were the ages of yours - and I so remember the 20 month old stage - exhausting (but wonderful, too)!! They just can't seem to make up their mind what they want and my youngest son (now 12.....nearing 13) was so attached to Mommy and ONLY Mommy - I cannot imagine the emotional exhaustion of homeschooling older ones w/a wee precious one who "needs" Mommy and everyone else.....my hat is off to you. My boys are 15 mos. apart so I've had their stages close in many regards - but I did keep children for 8 years that were not always the same ages as my own and I do remember how sound I slept at night - whew!

Bless you ~ I hope you have a great holiday weekend - enjoy it!
Blessings,
Harriette
