I Remember Laura

At first, it was exciting to hear that someone is doing a Laura Ingalls Wilder blog-a-thon during the month of June.  I was all enthused to take part until I realized the weekly topics were somewhat limiting for me to blog about. The first week is quilts, and while I have some lovely ones, they are all safely tucked away from the mess of construction and current round of warm temperatures; not accessible for show and tell at all. The second week's topic is buttons...and that must show my lack of creativity because "buttons" are a theme that I could not write about for more than a sentence or two.

So.

It all felt so limiting for something as wonderfully broad and colorful as Laura's life was, but I wanted to post about LIW anyway, only without the constraints. Most people can fondly recall reading their set of "Little House" books as a child, but my earliest Laura memory goes back even further. You see, even before I could read, my Mother read the books aloud to me- the whole set! In later years, I became a fan of Laura's pre-Little House writings that she did as a farm-wife contributor to the Missouri Ruralist. It really planted a seed, because for many years it was my wish to go and actually visit many of the places Laura lived. And then a few years ago, I was lucky enough to make a friend who was as interested in Laura's life as I was, and so we saved, made plans, and ultimately drove around the prairie one summer visiting several of Laura's previous homes.

And I'd like to share some of those memories with you, during the month of June.

My mother

did the very same thing. I have wonderful memories of the two of us sitting on my bed at bedtime, and mom reading me the Little House books, every night, a chapter at a time. I entirely credit my love of reading and literature to her!

confession - I read them still!

***I still read them too! And my mom still talks about how she read me the entire series and then mentions anecdotes from the books!****
