In and Around the Home this Week![]() My husband is great for saving things that most people would find useless. A few weeks ago he brought over an old wheel barrow from my in-law's farm. It was so old, it was probably the original prototype for the first wheel barrow. It had a big rusty hole in the bottom, and, unknown to him at the time, a bad wheel with a leak. A couple weeks later, I asked my husband what he did with it. I had an idea that if we removed the bad wheel, it might make a nice planter for the front yard. "I ordered a new wheel for it. That's what came in that delivery package the other day," he told me. "You ordered a new wheel for that thing?! It has a hole in it!" "Well, I can't just get rid of it. After all, it wasn't that long ago that I put new handles on it." Of course, I do things he thinks are crazy, too. On Saturday, I got lost driving out to our niece's birthday party. My husband could not come because he had a commitment in Lancaster. While I was driving along some country road where my husband grew up, there was this large, pitiful turtle right in the middle of the road. When I pulled over to pick the turtle up and perform a "turtle rescue", he hissed at me before tucking his head deep into his shell. When I told my husband of the turtle incident later on, he looked alarmed and told me that this is the time of year that the snapping turtles crawl out of the creek to lay their eggs. "You're lucky he didn't take off your fingers!" Later on I looked at some pictures of snapping turtles and decided it hadn't been a snapper, just a hisser. In the garden: Sunflowers are starting to sprout from the ground, as are carrots. We hoed the garden and then I started more seedlings for our July planting. I also planted that enormous morning glory that will bloom red flowers, so now I'm just worrying about weeds. On the table: Herbed fritatta, buttermilk pancakes, bacon, raspberry swirl cheesecake. It was breakfast for supper, mostly due to the fact that someone we know had a hog butchered and we now have a lot of bacon. Bumper sticker spotted: We don't want a bigger piece of the pie. We want a different pie! Leave a Comment { Last Page } { Page 49 of 128 } { Next Page } |
