It’s Fasnacht Day!

Oh, a day of yummy fried angular-donuts powdered in fine sugar. My husband and I disagree on the exact reason for this regional PA Dutch holiday. My husband thinks it has more to do with Lent, and I think it has more to do with using up your lard to make way for fresh lard after butchering time ---he’s probably right, and I’m probably practical. But here is what I know for sure: I don’t have any lard, and I don’t have time today to make fatty donuts. But if your local market is open or you see a church selling them today, I encourage you to give them a try and help keep this interesting tradition alive.

Edit: Okay, it has come to my attention that folks outside of Pennsylvania and the surrounding region may have never heard of our obscure holiday. It appears that the rest of the world calls it "Shrove Tuesday." Who knew?

Ok, I am learning something here, because I have never heard of them either. I love doughnuts as well though!!!

God's Blessings,
Amy Jo

***Apparently this is a regional holiday, if you can believe there is such a thing! But I think we can all celebrate donuts. ~Monica~ *****

It is celebrated up here in Canada. It's on the calender as Lent. It's also nicknamed pancake Tuesday and the stores sell the Polish donuts. It's not a day off work type of holiday though. It's supose to be the last day to stuff up on carbs before a 40 day fast from "extras".
Oh and some times it is called Shrove Tuesday up here to.

***Wow, thanks! It's interesting to get a Canadian perspective. It's not exactly a day-off from work here either, though people do step out to buy the donuts.***
